International Mother Earth Day: enjoy Fuengirola in a more responsible way

International Mother Earth Day: enjoy Fuengirola in a more responsible way

Every 22nd April marks International Mother Earth Day, a date that invites us to reflect on the importance of caring for the natural environment and appreciating everything it offers us, from the privileged climate of the Costa del Sol to the richness of its landscapes and biodiversity.
At Hotel Yaramar, located on the beachfront in Fuengirola, we believe that enjoying a seaside holiday also means doing so consciously. We are committed to a model of sustainable tourism that allows our guests to enjoy a complete experience without compromising respect for the environment.
During your stay at our hotel, you can easily contribute to reducing environmental impact while enjoying everything the Costa del Sol has to offer.
Simple actions such as using the hotel’s recycling points correctly, using water responsibly or adjusting air conditioning efficiently help optimise resources. In addition, we work to reduce the use of single-use plastics and promote more sustainable alternatives throughout our facilities.
It is also important to avoid food waste, a key practice within a responsible consumption model. Serving only what is needed contributes to more efficient and sustainable management.
Travelling is about discovering, unwinding and enjoying, but it is also an opportunity to do so in a more respectful way. At Hotel Yaramar, we continue to move towards more conscious tourism, where every small gesture counts. This Mother Earth Day, we invite you to be part of that change, without giving up what matters the most: enjoying your holiday by the Mediterranean.

Remember that all these actions contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Let's make every trip an adventure for us and a gift for the planet!

Puerto Marina & Sea Life

Puerto Marina & Sea Life

Are you on holiday at Hotel Yaramar right now and you would love to make the most of these beautiful and sunny winter days?

If the answer to both questions is yes this week we would like to suggest you a fantastic plan: Visiting Puerto Marina and its Sea Life aquarium.

Puerto Marina is the marina of the neighbouring town of Benalmadena and one of its main tourist attractions. Together with Puerto Banus is one of the most popular and beautiful marinas in Costa del Sol.

Its design is quite unique and there you can find some stunning boats, but apart from that Puerto Marina also offers a great leisure offer as there you can find lots of different establishments like shops, restaurants, ice cream parlours, bars and even an aquarium that belongs to the famous British company Sea Life.

Sea Life Benalmadena is one of the most popular attractions in Costa del Sol. It has been there for 20 years, its visitors are many and the diversity of species you find there is quite impressive. Among the most popular species of this famous aquarium are the amazing black tip reef sharks, the massive green sea turtles, the scary piranhas or the friendly otters.

If you fancy visiting this great aquarium you can do it any day from 10:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M. You can either buy the tickets there or online, though if you get them online on their official website the price will be slightly cheaper.

As you know public transport in Costa del Sol is cheap and efficient, so getting to Puerto Marina from Los Boliches by bus is quite easy. The bus line that connects both places is the one that links Fuengirola with Torremolinos and the closest stop to Hotel Yaramar is the one opposite the Church in Los Boliches, right by Unicaja bank. If you would like to take a look at the bus times click here.

We really hope you like the great plan we have just suggest you and you make the most of your holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola!

The Enlightenment Stupa

The Enlightenment Stupa

Have you ever observed the landscape when you were at the beach in Fuengirola and have seen something golden and shiny up in the mountains? Well, that sparkly thing you saw is the Buddhist Stupa in Benalmadena.

This stupa is known as the “Enlightenment Stupa” and it is the biggest one in Europe.

This temple represents peace, prosperity and harmony and it is a place for meditation since it opened its doors almost 10 years ago.

Inside the building there is a meditation room with beautiful paintings on its walls, and downstairs there is a room that is used for exhibitions related to Tibetan Buddhism, the culture of the Himalayans and the stupas around the world.

If you fancy visiting this beautiful place for meditation you can do it without much trouble thanks to the train line that connects Fuengirola with Malaga and other towns in Costa del Sol. You only have to get the on train in Los Boliches station (the closest one to Hotel Yaramar) and get off in Benalmádena – Arroyo de la Miel. Once you are there, right by the station, you will have to get on the L2, the bus that connects Arroyo de la Miel with the stupa and the Butterfly Park, a unique attraction in Costa del Sol… well worth a visit too!

The Enlightenment Stupa is closed on Monday, but it is open the rest of the days, so if you are staying at Hotel Yaramar and after reading this post you are all curious and fancy a closer look to this wonderful place we recommend you a visit.

Its beautiful architecture, its stunning paintings and the wonderful views of the coast that you can enjoy from there are breathtaking!

"Los Boliches"

Los Boliches is one of the most important areas in Fuengirola and it feels like a proper town, not just a neighbourhood. In the old times it was known as “Boliche” and it was totally separated from Fuengirola, but due to the growth of the area nowadays it is totally integrated in the town.

Los Boliches is named after the small boats that were used to fish in the old times that were called “bolichitos”.

Its first historical reference dates from 1822 when 25 residents were listed in the Register.

In the 30s homes were mainly huts with a roof made of palm leaves all close together along the old road.

Los Boliches has always been considered as a neighbourhood of fishermen, though truth is that most of them used to work in the sea and also in the country depending on the season. Still, the fishing in Los Boliches was constant.

When tourism arrived many fishermen left their hard work in the sea and started working in construction and in the hotel industry.

In 1957 Los Boliches market was built and it still remains in the same place offering services to residents and visitors. In 1970 the works for a new train line started, this transformed Los Boliches a lot and it made it more modern.

It is amazing how tourism and construction can change a place so much. The area where Hotel Yaramar is located doesn’t look at all like in the old times. Back in the day in that zone there were lots of humble small houses owned by fishermen and the Virgen del Carmen statue, now by Hotel Ángela, was also there.

We recommend you to visit the most outstanding places in Los Boliches, which are the Virgen del Carmen church, Los Boliches market, the Roman monument and Finca del Secretario, also from the Roman period.

Make the most of your stay in Hotel Yaramar and discover the secrets and charm hidden in one of the most beautiful areas in Costa del Sol. The experience is well worth it!!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is round the corner, and as Hotel Yaramar loves any kind of celebration, this year we are going to do again our popular pumpkin contest.

Despite Halloween is not something that we traditionally celebrate in Fuengirola or anywhere in Costa del Sol, this is the 2nd year that we do this contest and if last year our staff proved that they were amazing artists, this year their work is outstanding and really impressing.

8 departments are competing for the prize, they all have worked hard and they have made the most of their imagination, putting a lot of effort in their scary projects.  The results are simply awesome, so we are afraid it is going to be difficult for you to choose a winner as all pumpkins look fantastic.

Last year the winning pumpkin was “Nightmare” and the creators of this spooky creature were the girls from Bar Patio… Will they be as lucky this year or another department will be the winner??? How exciting!!

Here we encourage you to visit our Facebook page to see our pumpkins more in detail and vote for your favourite. The winning department will get a dinner for the whole team…Good luck to them all, and may the best pumpkin win!

Happy Halloween!!

Gazpacho

Gazpacho

Last week we recommended you to make the most of the spring by visiting the beautiful Parque de la Batería. This week as the weather is still warm and lovely we encourage you to have a tasty and fresh gazpacho with us at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola.

Here at Hotel Yaramar you can give it a go either at the Rivera Beach Club, where it is available all year round, or at our restaurant, during the summer months in the Andalusian nights.

Gazpacho has to be served cold, it is very tasty and also contains lots of vitamins, therefore it is very healthy.

Among its main ingredients are bread, olive oil and fresh tomatoes, so it is one of the most important dishes of the Mediterranean diet.

Gazpacho is part of the typical Andalusian cuisine and has evolved with the years to the current version. This evolution has not only made it more delicious but also resulted in the creation of new yummy dishes like salmorejo or like ajoblanco.

Its origins are unclear though it is thought that it comes from the hottest regions of Spain where labourers needed a cheap and refreshing dish for a bit of energy boost.

In the 60s with the tourist boom gazpacho started to get known internationally.

Nowadays it is consumed during the warmest months as a low fat refreshing drink. 100ml of it only contains among 44 and 55 calories, which is amazing. Besides its little calories, it will also leave you well satisfied, so it is great if you want to lose weight.

It has been proved that having gazpacho regularly reduces probabilities of suffering certain kinds of cancer and as vegetables are its main ingredient it is obvious that it is also very good for our health in general.

Have you ever had gazpacho? Did you like it? Would you like us to show you how prepare it? Please, let us know on our Facebook page. It would be a pleasure to us to teach you!

Hemingway & Ronda

Hemingway & Ronda

2014 started just a week ago and among the New Year’s resolutions of many of us are possibly to travel more or read more.

Not everybody loves reading the same kind of books or love the same authors, but what is undeniable is that Ernest Hemingway was one of the most important writers of all times and also a great traveler.

This American author did love Spain and this was featured in some of his work, being a good example of this his famous book “The Sun Also Rises”.

Hemingway hung out with famous Spanish artists like Pablo Picasso and attended the San Fermines in Pamplona a few times. This experience left him fascinated about bulls and bullfighting and made him write the above named book.

“The Sun Also Rises” received great reviews and it was considered his greatest piece of work. A few years later while in Spain he wrote a book called “Death in the afternoon” which was also about bullfighting and Spain.

His relationship with Spain was very important as not only he wrote about our country and our traditions but he also worked here as a reporter during the Spanish Civil War.

He was also very close friends with famous Spanish bullfighters like Antonio Ordoñez, who came from Ronda. In Ronda in fact there is a very famous promenade named after the popular American writer due to his deep friendship with Ordoñez and his love for this beautiful town. This promenade is one of the most emblematic in town as it is right by El Tajo gorge.

About Ronda he wrote that it is a place worth a visit. He considered it a very romantic town, perfect to get to spend time with a special lady due to its beautiful environment, its good wine, great food and its peacefulness.

We totally agree with him as Ronda is no doubt one of the most special and beautiful places in Costa del Sol, therefore the visit is more than worth it.

If you are passionate about bullfighting, you love Hemingway’s books and we have awoken your interest we recommend you to visit Ronda and get to explore it while on holiday with us at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola.

We are sure that, like Hemingway, you will also fall in love with it!

Malaga Film Festival

Malaga Film Festival

Do you like Spanish cinema? Did you know that Malaga has its own film festival?

Last Saturday the 20th of April the Malaga Film Festival started, being this one of the most important festivals in Spain.

It lasts one week and it is quite a new festival as it has been celebrated only since 1998. On it apart from showing the newest and most outstanding Spanish films of the year also honorific awards are handled out.

The most important award of this festival is the “Golden Biznaga”, as the biznaga is one of the most characteristic symbols of the city of Malaga. This award is given by the jury to the best film presented on the festival.

The Malaga Film Festival receives a lot of attention from the media and it is attended by many famous actors and directors as since it started its main aim has been to promote Spanish cinema.

The festival takes place in different places around the city, being Teatro Cervantes its core, as it is there where the premieres of the films aiming to win the “Golden Biznaga” are held and also where the homage acts and press conferences take place.

Apart from Teatro Cervantes, the most legendary cinema in Malaga, Cine Albéniz, also shows many of the films aiming to win the award, and the Picasso Museum organizes activities related to the film industry.

If you are currently staying at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you to visit Malaga. Now more than ever the capital of Costa del Sol looks amazing, so do not miss it and enjoy the glamour on the Malaga Film Festival red carpet.

Sunflower seeds

Sunflower seeds

Have you done a bit of people watching while on holiday in Spain and realised that here it is very common to eat sunflower seeds?

Sunflower seeds are a very popular snack among Spaniards, while everywhere else in the world they are quite unusual…in fact, while here you can buy them in any supermarket, sweet shop or kiosk, in other countries they can only be found in pet or health food shops.

Although nobody really know for certain the origin of this typical Spanish tradition, it is almost impossible to walk around any square in Spain and not finding someone seated on a bench eating sunflower seeds for hours.

The seeds are sold in bags of different sizes, they can be salted or not, and in general they come whole, so you need to be quite skilled to open them with your teeth, eat the seed and then throw the hull away.

Although they are quite addictive, as it is impossible to eat just the one, they are very good for our system as they contain high levels of Vitamin E and B, which gives us a lot of energy and are a good anti-ageing remedy.

They are also rich in fibre, omega-6 fatty acids, have antioxidant properties and help us fight against cholesterol.

If you love Spain and would fancy to know more about our peculiar customs, you might like to know that after a 2 week break, from the 27th of April, our free Spanish culture activity is back every Thursday at 10:00 in the Churchill Bar of Hotel Yaramar.

See you there!

Andalusia and the film industry

Andalusia and the film industry

This Friday, the 28th of February, is a bank holiday in our area as we celebrate the Day of Andalusia.

Andalusia is the most populated region in Spain and one of our most important tourist destinations.

Its unique charm, beautiful corners and diversity of landscapes make it a perfect place to film all kind of movies.

We mistakenly think that most films are filmed in Hollywood or in the exact place where the story is meant to happen, though reality is well different. Many films have been shot in Andalusia and we are sure you have been seen many of them quite a few times. We are about to tell you about some of them…Ready to get shocked?

  • In the Desert of Tabernas, in Almeria, many directors filmed very famous Westerns like “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. This is Europe’s only desert.

  • Some scenes in “Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade” were also filmed in Almeria, though the desert and the train scenes were shot in Guadix (Granada).

  • Some of the scenes in “Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace” and “Episode II: The Attack of the Clones” were shot in Andalusia, to be more precise in Sevilla. Princess Amidala’s Palace on Naboo is the famous Plaza de España in Sevilla.

  • The scene of “Lawrence of Arabia” that happens right after crossing the desert was also shot in Plaza de España in Sevilla. The desert shots were taken in Níjar, Almería.

  • The last scene of the Swedish version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” was filmed in playa de la Malagueta in Malaga.

  • Many scenes of “James Bond: Die Another Day” were filmed in Cadiz. The famous one where Halle Berry sauntered from the sea wearing an orange bikini is one of them.

  • Some of the outdoor shots of “Night & Day” starred by Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz were taken in Cadiz and the motorbikes scenes were filmed in Sevilla.

Did you know about this? Had you noticed when you watched them? It would be impossible to name them all, but as you can see many blockbusters have been filmed here.

If you are a film fanatic and you would love some of the scenes of your life to happen in Andalusia and Costa del Sol, we hope to see you very soon at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola… We cannot think of a better setting!!
