Roasted chestnuts

Winter is getting closer and the temperatures in Costa del Sol start to lower a bit. When coldness arrives roasted chestnuts also do so. They are a traditional and hot snack typical from autumn that can be bought in the streets, in any of the many kiosks that this time of year are settled in our towns.

Their smell is something very typical in Spain from October till the end of the festive season.

Chestnut sellers have set up their kiosks in our neighbourhoods filling the air with that particular smell which is so inviting that when the dark comes we all feel temped to buy a cone of hot chestnuts.

Roasting them is not as easy as it seems, it is a skill that in families of sellers passes from parents to children.

A pair of pots with holes are put over a fire. Then scored chestnuts are put on the pot and some salt is added. From time to time the chestnut seller moves the pot in order to ensure an even roast. Once they are roasted they are put on a big tray and sold in cones.

In Spain eating them is not only a tradition but also a tasty pleasure… Is this done in your towns too or you had never heard about this great snack?
