Holy Week 2024
This year Holy Week is the last week of
March, so if you are planning to visit Hotel Yaramar during this
period and you want to enjoy one of the most beautiful and popular
traditions we have in Spain, this post will be of great interest
to you.
If you don't feel like going to central Fuengirola and
you prefer to experience Holy Week without going too far from the hotel,
you will be happy to know that in Los Boliches you can enjoy several
wonderful processions.
The first of these will take place on Friday 22nd March, at 20:30 hours, when the Brotherhood of Jesús el Cautivo will go in procession through the main streets of our neighbourhood, departing from the church in Los Boliches and finishing at around 22:00 hours at their Brotherhood headquarters, right by the fairground.
On Sunday 24th March, Palm Sunday, there will be another procession at 10:30 am from this same Brotherhood headquarters to the church in Los Boliches, arriving there at around 11:00 am.
Finally, on Sunday 31st March, Easter Sunday, at 11:30 A.M, the Brotherhood of El Cautivo will take out its Resurrected Christ and take it in procession through the main streets of Los Boliches, ending the event at 14:00 at its brotherhood house.
Holy Week is not only part of our culture but also of our art and our history, so if you are lucky enough to be on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, in late March we recommend you not to miss one of the most impressive representations on the Costa del Sol!

Perseid meteor shower
One of the things we love the most about summer is the great amount of time we spend outdoors.
In the morning many of us love sunbathing at the beach or by the pool, while when the evening comes and temperatures go down having a nice walk or a refreshing drink in a beautiful terrace is just bliss.
Summer means good weather holidays, relax…, Can you think of anything more relaxing than being outdoors at night counting stars? …Difficult, right?
Looking up at the sky any summer night is captivating and fascinating, but doing it when you can see Perseids is simply amazing.
Perseids are a meteor shower that happens every year between the 16th of July and the 24th of August, reaching its highest intensity the nights of the 11th, 12th and 13th of August, so this Saturday, Sunday and next Monday.
This meteor shower is also known as “St. Lawrence’s Tears” as the 10th of August is St. Lawrence’s Day and for this reason this amazing phenomenom was somehow linked with the tears this saint cried before getting burnt.
If you have the fortune of being currently on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you to go outdoors and take a look at the sky. You will have to take your eyes off the beautiful Mediterranean Sea for a moment, but if you manage to see the amazing Perseids it will be well worth it!

What does “Yaramar” mean?
Do you know where our hotel’s name comes from? Let me tell you a secret…
The name is formed by 2 words: “Yara” and “mar”. Some of you might know that “mar” is the Spanish word for sea. This makes sense if you think of the wonderful views we have from our facilities. However what is “Yara”? I write it in capital letter because it is a name. This name comes from Brasil where it means “mermaid”. Maybe this is why I am sitting right at the hall entrance at the Hotel Yaramar.
We have not yet seen mermaids in the area of the Costa del Sol (except for me of course), if you see one please contact us! So, why this name after all? Well, Yara is the name of the Hotel owner’s daughter. If you visit us you will have the pleasure of meeting her at the Managers cocktail since she is our Guest Relations Manager. For those of you who follow us on facebook, she is the one chatting and keeping you updated. Would you like to know another secret? New yoga classes at Hotel Yaramar
This week we come with great information for you as we have some fantastic news regarding our activity program.
From now on every Monday and Thursday at 09:45 A.M. there will be 45 minute yoga classes in the card room of Hotel Yaramar.
The person in charge of these classes is a lovely girl called Audrey.
Audrey is from France ( near Bordeaux), is fluent in English as she lived in London for a while, and has been practising yoga for 5 years and teaching it for 1.
She gained her certificate as yoga instructor last year in Goa (India). After this she spent a few months in Cambodia and now she is based in Costa del Sol.
Audrey’s classes are gentle yoga classes, free of charge and designed for a maximum of 10 people. Anyone fit with no serious mobility or health issues can join the class. The classes will include meditation, exercises for balance, stretching, and so.
Audrey is looking forward to share her yoga knowledge and skills with you and hopes those who attend her classes enjoy practising during their stay at Hotel Yaramar.
Why don’t you give a go at practising this beautiful discipline with Audrey?

The Cenachero
The cenachero, together with the biznaga and the boquerón is a popular symbol of the city of Malaga, but who is he really and why is he so important in Costa del Sol?
The cenachero was a fisherman who rambled around the city of Malaga carrying fish (boquerones, mackerels, sardines, chanquetes or any kind of typical specie from the area) on baskets made of straw. This profession does not exist anymore.
Exactly 50 years ago Jaime Fernández Pimentel, author of the also famous statue of “The Biznaguero”, immortalized the figure of the cenachero in a statue inspired on a popular fisherman from Malaga known as Manolo “El Petaca”.
The sculpture, currently located in Plaza de la Marina, is 2 metres long and has a plaque with a beautiful poem about this typical character written by Salvador Rueda, a very famous poet also from Malaga. The poem in English would say more or less this:
“There you can see the fishermen
with their dark coloured baggy trousers
swinging their straw baskets
with their arms akimbo
when talking out loud
the veins of their necks swell
And in each beautiful fish
you can see a different scale
in each scale a different colour
and in each colour a sparkle”.
Although the cenachero is a character that does not exist anymore he is still well remembered in Malaga thanks to this beautiful bronze statue, which has made him become a real symbol of the city.
By the way, did you know that there is a city in Alabama (U.S) called Mobile which has a replica of our famous sculpture of the cenachero? It seems that Malaga and Mobile were twinned in the past so this is why this replica is located in a place called “Malaga Plaza” dedicated to the capital of Costa del Sol… So interesting!!
Don’t you know the statue of “The cenachero” yet? This week on the blog of Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you a fantastic festival that will take place in Fuengirola this weekend.
This festival is called Fulatina Fest, this is its first edition, and our hotel, together with Hotel Angela, is part of the official accommodation of the event.
Fulanita Fest is a female festival which aim is to draw attention to the great musical moment that women are living in Spain.
The first event linked to the Fulanita Fest will be this Friday, the 27th of May, from 8:00 P.M to 04:00 A.M in the Florida Beach Club in La Cala de Mijas, where there will be a welcome party with 4 fantastic female DJs.
On Saturday, the 28th of May, from 10:00 A.M to 3:00 P.M at the Ejido beach in Fuengirola, right by the Sohail Castle, there will be a women’s beach football tournament.
The concert, which is the highlight of the festival, will be at the MareNostrum venue from 7:00 P.M, an incredible place right by the Fuengirola Castle with the beautiful Mediterranean sea in the background.
The amazing artists that will perform are Rigoberta Bandini, Delaporte, María Peláe and DJ Rocio Saiz.
Ticket prices start at 32 euros and can get purchased online on the official MareNostrum Fuengirola website
To finish a fantastic weekend full of events, on Sunday, the 29th of May, there will be talks, and an outdoor party at the Florida Beach Club in La Cala again, with other 4 female Djs.

Each Thursday at 10:00 A.M. in Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we have a Spanish culture activity in which we talk about Spanish customs, gastaronomy and also share some information about Andalusia in general and Costa del Sol in particular.
Tomorrow, Tuesday the 28th of February, is the Day of Andalusia, so on this blog post we would like to explain you a little bit more about this special day.
The Day of Andalusia started getting celebrated in 1980, as it was then when Andalusia became a Spanish Autonomous Community with full autonomy.
When we speak about Andalusia, it is impossible not to mention Blas Infante, an Andalusian polititian, originally from the beautiful town of Casares (Malaga), who is considered as the father of Andalusia, mainly because his ideas helped to recover the history of Andalusia and because he defended the total autonomy of Andalusia.
While the Spanish anthem has no lyrics, the Andalusian one does, and the author of these is no other than Blas Infante.
He was also who designed the Andalusian flag and the Andalusian emblem. The flag has 3 horizontal stripes and its colours are green, white and green (colours that represent the Andalusian landscape, purity and hope).
Regarding the emblem of Andalusia, this is inspired in the emblem of the city of Cadiz, and includes the figure of Hercules with 2 lions between 2 columns and an inscription that says “Andalusia, for itself, for Spain, and for Humanity”.

"La Virgen del Carmen"
If you have visited us in previous years around this time, you'll know that this is a very important week both in our city, Fuengirola, and in our neighborhood, Los Boliches.
From Wednesday, July 15th to Sunday, July 19th, the Feria de Los Boliches will take place. If you are currently enjoying a wonderful vacation at the Hotel Yaramar, we recommend you visit the Fairgrounds as the celebration will be held there.
Every year, July 16th is the most important day of the year for many locals as it is the day of Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of Los Boliches and all sailors.
Although this festival is celebrated throughout Fuengirola, in Los Boliches, it is celebrated with special fervor as Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of this beautiful neighborhood of maritime origin.
The work of sailors and fishermen is hard and risky work, so due to the protection they believe their virgin provides them, every July 16th, many seamen parade her in gratitude.
This procession is considered by many to be the most beautiful and special one of the year as it ends with the virgin in the water surrounded by boats and fireworks.

The work of sailors and fishermen is hard and risky work, so due to the protection they believe their virgin provides them, every July 16th, many seamen parade her in gratitude.

A "smurf" and a "cloud"
If you are not from Malaga you might find the title of today’s post quite weird.
Here though these words are something we hear daily in any bar or café at breakfast or teatime.
After this little explanation you might be even more curious, so let’s explain properly what a “smurf” and a “cloud” really mean in Costa del Sol.
If during your holiday you hear the word “pitufo” ( smurf in English) it is almost certain that the person who said it wasn’t really talking about the cute blue creatures created by Belgian comic artist Peyo.
Here in Malaga a “smurf” is a small hot and toasted bread roll that depending on what you put on it can become a real delicacy.
Considering we are in Andalusia it is not surprising one of the most popular “smurfs” are the ones that come with olive oil and tomato… Very Meditarrean and also very healthy!
Regarding the “cloud” when we say it in a café we are not talking about the weather, but about coffee.
In Malaga there are many ways to name the kind of coffee you fancy depending on how much milk you want in it.
A “nube” ( cloud in English) in fact is a coffee that contains a lot of milk and very little coffee and if it is served in a glass and not in a cup even better… much more authentic!

Outdoor gym
One of the best things about Hotel Yaramar without a doubt is its wonderful beachfront location. The beaches of Fuengirola and its Paseo Marítimo are one of the best in Costa del Sol because of its cleanliness and its length.
It is very common to see many clocals and tourists enjoying the great temperatures and getting fit at the same time, as little by little our Paseo Maritimo has become an outdoor sports circuit by the sea.
Our Paseo Marítimo already had some training areas equipped with some gym equipment which aim was to offer the possibility of training while enjoying the beach… how wonderful! exercising in a free outdoor gym by the sea is not something that everybody has access to!
Last December the authorities in Fuengirola went a bit further and now not only we have the equipment but also some information signs along the 7 kilometres of length that the Paseo Maritimo has (from Carvajal to the Sohail Castle), so this way if you walk, skate, run or go cycling you will be able to know where exactly you are and how many kilometres you have covered… At last, getting fit made easy!
In fact very close to Hotel Yaramar and just opposite Hotel Ángela, as that is the halfway point of the circuit, now there is a big board that contains different warming up and stretching exercises to help you get ready to workout.
