Holy Week 2024

Holy Week 2024

This year Holy Week is the last week of March, so if you are planning to visit Hotel Yaramar during this period and you want to enjoy one of the most beautiful and popular traditions we have in Spain, this post will be of great interest to you.

If you don't feel like going to central Fuengirola and you prefer to experience Holy Week without going too far from the hotel, you will be happy to know that in Los Boliches you can enjoy several wonderful processions.

The first of these will take place on Friday 22nd March, at 20:30 hours, when the Brotherhood of Jesús el Cautivo will go in procession through the main streets of our neighbourhood, departing from the church in Los Boliches and finishing at around 22:00 hours at their Brotherhood headquarters, right by the fairground.

On Sunday 24th March, Palm Sunday, there will be another procession at 10:30 am from this same Brotherhood headquarters to the church in Los Boliches, arriving there at around 11:00 am.

Finally, on Sunday 31st March, Easter Sunday, at 11:30 A.M, the Brotherhood of El Cautivo will take out its Resurrected Christ and take it in procession through the main streets of Los Boliches, ending the event at 14:00 at its brotherhood house.

Holy Week is not only part of our culture but also of our art and our history, so if you are lucky enough to be on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, in late March we recommend you not to miss one of the most impressive representations on the Costa del Sol!

Drive-in cinema in Malaga

Drive-in cinema in Malaga

Are you going to make the most of the fantastic offer that Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, has launched and you are going to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the Costa del Sol?

If you have decided to spend this special weekend with us, and besides a fabulous stay you would like to surprise your loved one with something very special we recommend you to visit the drive-in cinema in Malaga.

Malaga’s Drive-in cinema opened last October, is located in the Guadalhorce industrial estate, is the second biggest in Europe, and has an impressive 250 square-metre screen.

The Drive-in cinema has 50s American cinema vibes, opens everyday of the year and shows new and classic films both in Spanish and the original language.

It is very simple as you can check the film listings and buy your tickets online through their official website.

In fact, as Valentine’s Day is round the corner, this week all their films are about love: “Grease”, “Pretty Woman”, “Moulin Rouge” and “50 Shades of Grey”.

Is there anything more romantic than enjoying a lovely film with the one you love? We don’t think so!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Lots to see in Mijas

Lots to see in Mijas

Some weeks ago here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar we recommended you to visit the Historical-Ethnological Museum of Mijas though in this beautiful white village very close to Fuengirola, apart from this wonderful museum, there are still many more things to see.

A good example is a peculiar chapel dedicated to Virgen de la Peña, the patron saint of Mijas. It was excavated in stone by some friars more than 450 years ago, so a visit to this beautiful and unique place is well worth it.

Inside the chapel there is a beautiful and antique figure of the saint which is very worshipped and adored in the village, not only by locals but also by visitors.

This special sacred place is open daily and its entry is free. Also the views of the coast that you can enjoy from there are magnificent considering the chapel is around 400 metres above sea level.

Mijas is not only known because its typical whiteness and its spectacular views but also for being home of one of the cutest and sweetest animals in the world: the donkey.

The first tourists arrived in Costa del Sol in the magniearly 60sficent so it seems that when they saw labourers getting back home with their donkeys after a hard day of work they asked them if they could get a picture taken beside the animals or if they could ride them. The idea of the “burro-taxi” comes from this and nowadays not only they are an institution in Mijas but also one of its main touristic attractions.

In Mijas the donkey is not just a symbol but a very loved and respected animal, so for this reason nowadays there is a special parking area just for them and a Non-Profit Association called “El Refugio del Burrito”, which works to improve conditions for donkeys in Spain, has an agreement with the town hall in order to ensure the welfare and health of these beautiful animals.

Here in Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you to make the most of one of our typical sunny days by visiting Mijas. Due to its proximity the bus service that connects Fuengirola and Mijas is reliable and frequent, so visiting the neighbour town is not only cheap but easy.

Enjoy the experience and please share it with us on our Facebook page Facebook page. You know how much we love to know about your holiday!

Monica's Chimney

Monica's Chimney

This can be considered the most romantic weekend of the year as this Friday is Valentine’s Day.

It is celebrated in most countries and most of us tend to do something special on the 14th of February to show our loved one how much we care. The most common thing is to prepare a romantic dinner at home or take them to a nice restaurant, to have a romantic break somewhere, to buy flowers or chocolates or to send him/her a Valentine’s card or even leave him/her a beautiful message on a social network. Well, some people in love go a bit further and do impressive things for the one they love even if it is not Valentine’s Day. A good example of this is what happened in Malaga about 20 years ago. In 1993 one day the tallest chimney in Malaga, which is the one down the promenade that belonged to an old plumb factory, suddenly appeared with a massive name painted on it. The name written was “Mónica” and this was meant to be a proof of love from a young local guy to his girlfriend Mónica with whom he had had a small argument. It is said that his intention was to write “Mónica, I love you” but he run out of paint so he could only write her name. Since then this chimney is known as “Monica’s Chimney” even if the painting is now long gone.

What do you think about this lovely story? Someone has done something similar where you live? Has someone done something this beautiful for you? We would love to hear your Valentine’s stories, so if you fancy sharing them with us please do it on our Facebook page or leave a comment here on the blog.

By the way, do you have plans on Valentine’s Day? If you are currently on Costa del Sol and you wish to spend such an important day with us at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, be certain you will have a fantastic time… You know how much we love special occasions and celebrations!!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

El Chorro

El Chorro

Did you know that it is possible to visit El Chorro by train? El Chorro is one of the most beautiful places in the region so as it is a place worth visiting there are some daily trains to there departing from Malaga María Zambrano Station. This means that having a great day outdoors embracing nature is not only easy but also affordable.

El Chorro is a small village of about 250 inhabitants which belongs to Álora, a town in the centre of the Malaga province.

Due to its ecological, historical and paleontological value El Chorro apart from being a village is also a protected hilly area and at the same time one of the most important climbing centres in Europe as it is a perfect place to practice this sport.

In El Chorro there is also a beautiful reservoir commonly known as El Chorro Reservoir, though its official name is Reservoir of the Count of Guadalhorce. This is the most popular and visited reservoir in Malaga as its beauty is outstanding and it offers an extensive variety of services.

El Chorro Reservoir, located between Álora and Ardales, is also an ideal place to practice water sports like canoeing due to the great condition and cleanliness of its water.

Its hiking route is one of the most interesting in Andalusia too as it includes walking through the famous limestone gorge which was formed by the Gualdalhorce River.

If you would like to enjoy nature and get some wonderful views, Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, recommends you to visit this rural paradise in the core of the Malaga province.

Get to discover the hidden gem of Costa del Sol, it will surely not disappoint!

Christmas in Malaga

Christmas in Malaga

December is about to begin, and Christmas is just around the corner, so many of us are starting to feel the typical excitement and happiness of this time of the year. Whether you love Christmas or you're not feeling very festive yet, from Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you take advantage of your visit to the Costa del Sol to enjoy Christmas in the center of Malaga as we know that by doing so, your Christmas spirit will soon appear.

Every year, the Christmas lighting ceremony takes place on the most important street of the Malaga capital, Calle Marqués de Larios, and just as it was before the pandemic, this event gathers a large number of Malagueños and visitors eager to kick off these very special holidays.

In fact, the Christmas lighting on this street is always impressive, and every year it showcases a new and gorgeous lighting different from the previous year.

This is actually not the only show, as at the Cathedral of Malaga, there is an audiovisual show on its tower at the same time as the one on Calle Larios, and on certain days at the Port of Malaga, there is a show with drone lights.

Another place in the capital worth visiting is the central Plaza de la Constitución as it is a few meters away from Calle Larios, and there concerts are organized with the collaboration of the Musical Foundation of Malaga.

If this December you plan to stay with us at Hotel Yaramar, we certainly hope you enjoy and include a visit to the center of Malaga. It's a unique experience that you'll surely love!

Perseid meteor shower

Perseid meteor shower

One of the things we love the most about summer is the great amount of time we spend outdoors.

In the morning many of us love sunbathing at the beach or by the pool, while when the evening comes and temperatures go down having a nice walk or a refreshing drink in a beautiful terrace is just bliss.

Summer means good weather holidays, relax…, Can you think of anything more relaxing than being outdoors at night counting stars? …Difficult, right?

Looking up at the sky any summer night is captivating and fascinating, but doing it when you can see Perseids is simply amazing.

Perseids are a meteor shower that happens every year between the 16th of July and the 24th of August, reaching its highest intensity the nights of the 11th, 12th and 13th of August, so this Saturday, Sunday and next Monday.

This meteor shower is also known as “St. Lawrence’s Tears” as the 10th of August is St. Lawrence’s Day and for this reason this amazing phenomenom was somehow linked with the tears this saint cried before getting burnt.

If you have the fortune of being currently on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you to go outdoors and take a look at the sky. You will have to take your eyes off the beautiful Mediterranean Sea for a moment, but if you manage to see the amazing Perseids it will be well worth it!

Puerto Marina & Sea Life

Puerto Marina & Sea Life

Are you on holiday at Hotel Yaramar right now and you would love to make the most of these beautiful and sunny winter days?

If the answer to both questions is yes this week we would like to suggest you a fantastic plan: Visiting Puerto Marina and its Sea Life aquarium.

Puerto Marina is the marina of the neighbouring town of Benalmadena and one of its main tourist attractions. Together with Puerto Banus is one of the most popular and beautiful marinas in Costa del Sol.

Its design is quite unique and there you can find some stunning boats, but apart from that Puerto Marina also offers a great leisure offer as there you can find lots of different establishments like shops, restaurants, ice cream parlours, bars and even an aquarium that belongs to the famous British company Sea Life.

Sea Life Benalmadena is one of the most popular attractions in Costa del Sol. It has been there for 20 years, its visitors are many and the diversity of species you find there is quite impressive. Among the most popular species of this famous aquarium are the amazing black tip reef sharks, the massive green sea turtles, the scary piranhas or the friendly otters.

If you fancy visiting this great aquarium you can do it any day from 10:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M. You can either buy the tickets there or online, though if you get them online on their official website the price will be slightly cheaper.

As you know public transport in Costa del Sol is cheap and efficient, so getting to Puerto Marina from Los Boliches by bus is quite easy. The bus line that connects both places is the one that links Fuengirola with Torremolinos and the closest stop to Hotel Yaramar is the one opposite the Church in Los Boliches, right by Unicaja bank. If you would like to take a look at the bus times click here.

We really hope you like the great plan we have just suggest you and you make the most of your holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola!

Photography exhibition in Fuengirola

Photography exhibition in Fuengirola

Do you love taking photosat any moment or on the other hand you only take lots of pictures while you are on holiday?Whichever is the case, if you like photography you will surely enjoy the free exhibition that right now is on display at Casa de la Cultura in Fuengirola.

This exhibition is called “3 out of 3, 30 years of photography”, it will be open till next Wednesday the 28th of January and it is composed of pictures taken by 8 former students of the photography course organised by the City Council.

This course in fact is one of the most popular of all courses in town. The reason might be there aren’t many places where you can take photos as beautiful as the ones you can take in Fuengirola. This is possibly due to the great sun and light we have in here… Don’t you think so?

In the exhibition there are around 60 photos and this is the third which is housed in Casa del Cultura to commemorate the 30th anniversary of this emblematic local building.

Well, if you don’t have plans for the next few days, why don’t you visit our town centre and take a look at this fantastic showing? We are sure that these amazing photos will give you great ideas and will motivate you to continue immortalising your life and holidays in pictures!

Malaga Fair

Here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar we have recommended you many times to visit the city of Malaga for several different reasons. This week we are about to do it again as right now the fair of the capital of Costa del Sol is on, and this is an event well worth experiencing as it is one of the best in Spain.

The fair of Malaga started last Saturday the 12th of August and it is on until Sunday the 20th , so if you are on holiday at Hotel Yaramar now we recommend you to visit Malaga to enjoy this fantastic festival.

The fair commemorates the Reconquest of Malaga by the Catholic Monarchs on the 19th of August 1487, so this is why it is always celebrated in mid August.

As all fairs, the one of Malaga has a very traditional side, but as it getsmany visitors from all over the world it is also a very cosmopolitan and international celebration.

During the day its takes place in the historical centre of the city, so it will be quite easy for you to get there thanks to train service that connects Fuengirola with Malaga.

Once there you will be able to observe thousands of beautiful flamenco dresses as well as lovely traditional dancing in most streets….because in Malaga during the fair there is always an amazing atmosphere!

"Plato de los Montes" of Málaga

It has been a while now since here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we last dedicated a post to the amazing cuisine we have in our area.

Autumn is now half gone, and as this time of year the temperatures go down a bit what we all feel like having is a dish of tasty warm and comforting food. So because of this and because we love good food this week here on the blog we wanted to introduce you one of the star dishes of our gastronomy: “Plato de los Montes”.

As its name indicates “Plato de los Montes” is originally from the Mounts of Malaga. It is a quite rich dish prepared and eaten mainly during autumn and winter, especially on Sundays. It traditionally includes pork in lard, fried egg, chorizo sausage, black pudding, chips and fried peppers… It sounds delicious, right?

Its origin is quite interesting as it seems that this meal was what muleteers started to eat in the 30s when they had to cross the mounts of Malaga. This job was quite hard and energy consuming so a big dish of food rich in fats was what they really needed to fight against tiredness and low temperatures.

Nowadays is one of the most popular dishes of our gastronomy and it is available in most “venta” restaurants around Costa del Sol.

Although as we said this is a dish rich in calories and cholesterol, from time to time we deserve a treat and to forget about our diets, especially when on holiday! Don’t you think so?

The three wise men are coming!

The three wise men are coming!

In most parts of Europe Christmas celebrations are over and many people have already put their Christmas decorations down.

In Spain though celebrations and joy continue, as tonight the 3 wise Men will visit our homes loaded with presents.

As we explained these last few weeks in our Spanish culture classes, the most common thing in Spain is to receive presents the night of the 5th of January or the morning of the 6th, though some people also get some on Christmas day.

On the 6th in the morning we also have the “El niño” lottery, a very special yearly draw that although is less popular than the Christmas one, on the 22nd of December, also gives amazing prizes away.

Do you have the fortune of currently being on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola? If you are, we recommend you not to miss the amazing 3 wise men parade this evening. It will pass through the main streets of Fuengirola and we are sure you are going to love it!

Happy 3 wise men day, everyone!

Video's coast

Video's coast

Last week we dedicated the weekly post of Hotel Yaramar to Ronda and we told you about the many artists who have fallen in love with this beautiful hillside town.

This week our blog entry is also about famous artists as many of them have recently chosen our beloved Costa del Sol to shoot their music videos or TV programs.

Last May celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay was seen around Fuengirola while one of his shows was being recorded in here.

In July British boyband “The Vamps” shot a music video in Marbella and El Chorro.

In late August beautiful pop singer and X-Factor judge Cheryl also landed in Costa del Sol to shoot her new video “I don’t care” also in Marbella.

And only a few weeks ago we received the visit of talented British singer James Blunt who came to Mijas to shoot a new video which seems to be country themed.

Here at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we think Costa del Sol has to have something pretty special to attract so many stars… Do you agree?

Monument to the Catholic Monarchs

Monument to the Catholic Monarchs

Many of you who have attended our weekly Spanish culture activity have shown some interest about the Catholic Monarchs, maybe because you are following the Spanish TV Series “Isabel” or because you have seen posters around town about the exhibition that Fuengirola has dedicated to these famous Spanish monarchs.

The Catholic Monarchs were very important in the history of Spain and in the history of our town as on the 7th of August 1485 Isabel I of Castile and Fernando II of Aragon conquered the Sohail Castle which was under the rule of Moors.

The exhibition above mentioned has been on display at the local museum “Museo Ciudad de Fuengirola” up until Sunday the 19th of January. It has been a real success as the number of visitors has been much higher than expected.

Fuengirola, apart from organising this exhibition has also wanted to dedicate them a square right in the centre of town, beside the old Town Hall. The square will be called Plaza de Los Reyes Católicos and will be inaugurated next Saturday the 25th of January. On its centre there will be a 3 metre tall bronze statue of the monarchs created by the talented local artist Rosario García who is also author of many other monuments in town.

If you are currently on holiday with us at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you are passionate about art and history we recommend you to visit Fuengirola city centre this Saturday afternoon to see this beautiful brand new monument.

Migas

Migas

It is winter and it is a bit chillier than the rest of the year, though here on Costa del Sol we still have a mild weather considering the low temperatures other parts of Spain, Europe and the world have. We, as locals, know we cannot really complain and are aware of how lucky we are, though when the temperatures decrease a little bit we really do fancy a tasty and warm wintery dish.

A very typical wintery dish in Malaga is migas (which literally means “crumbs”). In fact the town of “Torrox” (on Eastern Costa del Sol) is famous for its migas recipe and because there every year they celebrate what is known as “The Migas Festival”.

Migas is one of the most popular dishes of the Andalusian cuisine and also a very traditional country dish as in the old times it was eaten by farm labourers.

Migas are quite caloric and high in carbohydrates though this makes it a perfect dish if we need lots of energy and have to fight against low temperatures.

We would like to share with you one of the easiest recipes available, as there are different versions depending on the chef and the region:

INGREDIENTS (4 SERVINGS)
  • 1 big tablespoon of olive oil

  • A big loaf of French bread ( if it has at least 1 day and it is a bit hard much better)

  • 100 grams of chorizo cut in cubes

  • 100 grams of pancetta cut in cubes

  • 4 cloves of garlic

METHOD
  1. Break the bread into crumbs and put them in a big bowl.

  2. Pour a quarter of a glass of water over the crumbs to make them moist. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it rest over night.

Typical costumes from Malaga: The Verdiales Costume

Typical costumes from Malaga: The Verdiales Costume

On this new blog entry we will keep on talking about typical costumes from Malaga.

Last week we mentioned that in Malaga we have 3 different typical costumes and we explained you about the marengo and marenga costumes.

This week we would like to introduce you the verdiales costume.

The verdiales outfit is a traditional costume worn by people from the Malaga Mountains which can vary depending on the area and on the verdiales band they might belong to.

In general lines the female version of this costume consists of:
  • A dress with vertical lines and puff sleeves. As the marenga dress the skirt of the verdiales one is a full skirt with a ruffle and its length is medium.

  • A white petticoat.

  • A black apron.

  • A white scarf over the shoulders.

  • White tights.

  • Black espadrilles with colourful ribbons knotted on the legs.

  • The hair is on a bun decorated with jasmine flowers.

The male version of the outfit includes:
  • Black trousers.

  • A black waistcoat.

  • A white shirt.

  • A red sash belt.

  • Black espadrilles.

  • A flashy hat with flowers, colourful ribbons, little mirrors and pearls.

In this case the hat worn by men stands out more than the dress worn by the ladies though it makes sense as this beautiful traditional hat can be considered as a real piece of art.

Had you ever seen such a beautiful hat? What do you think about it? We are willing to know your opinion so if you fancy you can share your impressions with us on the Facebook page of Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola.

What does “Yaramar” mean?

What does “Yaramar” mean?

Do you know where our hotel’s name comes from? Let me tell you a secret…

The name is formed by 2 words: “Yara” and “mar”. Some of you might know that “mar” is the Spanish word for sea. This makes sense if you think of the wonderful views we have from our facilities. However what is “Yara”? I write it in capital letter because it is a name. This name comes from Brasil where it means “mermaid”. Maybe this is why I am sitting right at the hall entrance at the Hotel Yaramar.

We have not yet seen mermaids in the area of the Costa del Sol (except for me of course), if you see one please contact us! So, why this name after all? Well, Yara is the name of the Hotel owner’s daughter. If you visit us you will have the pleasure of meeting her at the Managers cocktail since she is our Guest Relations Manager. For those of you who follow us on facebook, she is the one chatting and keeping you updated. Would you like to know another secret? You might be able to use this information on a hotel quiz and win a price!

Remember this is a secret…don´t tell anyone I told you…

See you soon!

Fuengirola's Fair

Fuengirola's Fair

As many of you may already know, on the 6th of October, the Fuengirola Fair begins at night.

For this reason, and because it fills us with joy to share our beautiful traditions with you at the Hotel Yaramar, we will be holding special free workshops about the fair at the Yarabar, located in our shopping gallery.

During the workshops, we will provide you with information about what the fair is, talk about all the events that will take place during its duration, tell you more about the traditional flamenco attire and the accompanying accessories, and also inform you about what you can eat and drink at the fairgrounds during the fair.

From the official fair program, we highlight the traditional flamenco mass in honor of the Virgin of the Rosary that is celebrated every year on the 7th of October at 10:00 in the morning at the central Constitution Square. This mass is much more majestic than a common mass as it has a festive atmosphere, and the majority of attendees come dressed in beautiful flamenco dresses.

If you want to have a fun time with us and immerse yourself in information about the fair, we await you at our Yarabar. By the way, in addition to great information, we will also provide a free glass of rebujito, the most popular drink of the fair, to all those who attend our fun special fair workshop.

Enjoy the Fair at the Hotel Yaramar!

The Enlightenment Stupa

The Enlightenment Stupa

Have you ever observed the landscape when you were at the beach in Fuengirola and have seen something golden and shiny up in the mountains? Well, that sparkly thing you saw is the Buddhist Stupa in Benalmadena.

This stupa is known as the “Enlightenment Stupa” and it is the biggest one in Europe.

This temple represents peace, prosperity and harmony and it is a place for meditation since it opened its doors almost 10 years ago.

Inside the building there is a meditation room with beautiful paintings on its walls, and downstairs there is a room that is used for exhibitions related to Tibetan Buddhism, the culture of the Himalayans and the stupas around the world.

If you fancy visiting this beautiful place for meditation you can do it without much trouble thanks to the train line that connects Fuengirola with Malaga and other towns in Costa del Sol. You only have to get the on train in Los Boliches station (the closest one to Hotel Yaramar) and get off in Benalmádena – Arroyo de la Miel. Once you are there, right by the station, you will have to get on the L2, the bus that connects Arroyo de la Miel with the stupa and the Butterfly Park, a unique attraction in Costa del Sol… well worth a visit too!

The Enlightenment Stupa is closed on Monday, but it is open the rest of the days, so if you are staying at Hotel Yaramar and after reading this post you are all curious and fancy a closer look to this wonderful place we recommend you a visit.

Its beautiful architecture, its stunning paintings and the wonderful views of the coast that you can enjoy from there are breathtaking!

"Crazy Cakes"

Friendliness and good sense of humour is, in general, something very characteristic of Malaga locals. This good sense of humour is present in many of the words we use in our everyday life and also in the funny names we use to name certain things.

These cakes we want to introduce you today are a good example of this as they have an incredibly funny name.

If you have participated in the Spanish culture activity organised by Hotel Yaramar every Thursday you might already know that these cakes are called “tortas locas” which literally means “crazy cakes”, something that is quite surprising as there is nothing wrong with them and in fact they look delicious.

These “crazy cakes” are very typical from Malaga so why do you think we use the adjective “locas” to describe them? We don’t really know why, but we think they are so delicious that when you try them you get crazily in love with them!

These cakes consist of two round pieces of puff pastry with some custard cream in the middle and egg yolk icing on top. The red thing that can also be seen on top is a little piece of candied cherry… Just thinking about them is mouth watering!

If you are currently on holiday at otel Yaramar, your hotel in FuengirolaH, and you would like to try them just know that they are quite easy to find in most bakeries and coffee shops on Costa del Sol.

Give them a go and enjoy one of our most typical cakes!

What is a jabega?

What is a jabega?

The main aim of Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, is to make you have a wonderful holiday. This summer, as many of you already know, apart from this we would also love you to embrace our culture.

On this blog and also on our weekly Spanish culture activity at the hotel we do our best to show you typical things of our area and the treasures that Fuengirola and the region of Malaga hide.

Because of this today we would like to dedicate this blog entry to jabegas.

A jabega is a rowing boat very typical from Malaga even if its origin is Phoenician. Although jabegas are very traditional, this tradition remains alive thanks to the love and passion of locals and to the regattas organised all over the area.

This 2013 there have been more regattas in the area than ever with a total of 12. Fuengirola was among participant towns and the regatta here took place on the 7th of July, being this the first time that it participates on this regatta league.

Malaga is on the coast and the sea is very important to locals so this is why it is essential to us to stay close to our roots and to preserve our typical traditions.

On your last holiday at Hotel Yaramar did you have the chance to see the regatta of jabegas in Fuengirola? If so we would love to know your opinion, so please visit our Facebook page and let us know!!

“La Galería” Market

Do you like Spanish food and enjoy becoming a food explorer when you come on holiday to Costa del Sol?

If this is your case and you liked our previous post about “La Cazuela de la Abuela” route you might find this week’s post quite interesting too as it is about the amazing new gourmet market that got opened in Fuengirola just two weeks ago.

This mordern new market is called “La Galería” ( “The Gallery”) and it is right in the city centre of Fuengirola, very close to Plaza de la Constitución and right opposite the main post office in town.

Although “La Galería” is not a very big market with only 12 stalls, in the few days it has been opened it has received many visitors eager to try the amazing options each of them offer.

The choice there is quite extense as it is possible to eat from Japanese and Italian food, to traditional Spanish options like tasty mollete bread rolls, local fried fish or the traditional Andalusian cold tomato puree called salmorejo.

Apart from food stalls in “La Galería” there are also some stalls specialised in drinks and in gourmet products and in the future there will also be cultural activities like wine tasting or art exhibitions.

You surely agree that Fuengirola has always been a great place to eat out as it has a vast amount of bars and restaurants offering all kind of cuisines… and now that this amazing market is open the choice is even wider!

Exhibition about cubism in Museo Carmen Thyssen

Exhibition about cubism in Museo Carmen Thyssen

Recently here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar we recommended you visit Casa de la Cultura of Fuengirola to see the exhibition about the posters of the fair that back then was there on display.

Today we would like to suggest you visit another great exhibition, though this time in the capital of Costa del Sol.

From the 18th of October 2017 till the 25th of February 2018 Museo Carmen Thyssen holds an interesting exhibition called “Juan Gris, María Blanchard and cubism (1916-1927)”.

As we pointed out in previous posts when we mentioned this museum, Museo Carmen Thyssen is based in a beautiful old building right in the heart of Malaga. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 A.M to 8:00 P.M and its entry price depends on if you only want to see the temporary exhibition or both, temporary and permanent. What is constant is the fact every Sunday from 5:00 P.M its entry is free.

The exhibition we mentioned above, called “Juan Gris, María Blanchard y los cubismos” is a temporary one that shows the most fascinating moments in 20th century art through the works of Juan Gris, María Blanchard and other artists with whom they both shared friendship and creative empathy.

If you really like modern art and you are planning to come on holiday to Hotel Yaramar sometime soon we recommend you go to Malaga and visit this exhibition.

Typical spanish breakfast

Typical spanish breakfast

Nutritionists state that breakfast is the most important and most necessary meal of the day as it is the first and it should provide between a 20 and a 25% of our daily calorie intake.

Many dieters though make the mistake of skipping it which can have negative effects on your health, as not having breakfast can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart diseases among many other things.

At Hotel Yaramar, we do love breakfast and it is something very important to us. For these reasons we always provide high quality products in order to make your experience enjoyable and pleasant.

There are many kind of breakfast. Among the most popular ones are the Continental or the English, but did you know there is also a typical Spanish breakfast?

The most typical Spanish breakfast is a cup of thick hot chocolate with churros or a white coffee with some churros dipped in sugar.

Churros are fried dough pastries made of flour, sugar, water and a pinch of salt. Although they are considered as the most important part of a typical Spanish breakfast they can also be served for tea and they are not only popular in Spain but also in most Latin American countries.

Had you ever heard about them? Have you ever tried them while on holiday in Spain? If you did so, we would love to know if you liked them.

If you are currently on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you have never eaten them you might be interested in knowing that you can find them almost daily in our breakfast buffet. If you give them a go and you love them we recommend you to try the ones from the most popular “churro café” in Fuengirola. This place is called “Casa Felipe” and it is located in calle Camilo José Cela, right in the city centre, very close to Bioparc.

If you have a beautiful typical Spanish breakfast you will surely start your day with lots of energy!

"Los Boliches"

Los Boliches is one of the most important areas in Fuengirola and it feels like a proper town, not just a neighbourhood. In the old times it was known as “Boliche” and it was totally separated from Fuengirola, but due to the growth of the area nowadays it is totally integrated in the town.

Los Boliches is named after the small boats that were used to fish in the old times that were called “bolichitos”.

Its first historical reference dates from 1822 when 25 residents were listed in the Register.

In the 30s homes were mainly huts with a roof made of palm leaves all close together along the old road.

Los Boliches has always been considered as a neighbourhood of fishermen, though truth is that most of them used to work in the sea and also in the country depending on the season. Still, the fishing in Los Boliches was constant.

When tourism arrived many fishermen left their hard work in the sea and started working in construction and in the hotel industry.

In 1957 Los Boliches market was built and it still remains in the same place offering services to residents and visitors. In 1970 the works for a new train line started, this transformed Los Boliches a lot and it made it more modern.

It is amazing how tourism and construction can change a place so much. The area where Hotel Yaramar is located doesn’t look at all like in the old times. Back in the day in that zone there were lots of humble small houses owned by fishermen and the Virgen del Carmen statue, now by Hotel Ángela, was also there.

We recommend you to visit the most outstanding places in Los Boliches, which are the Virgen del Carmen church, Los Boliches market, the Roman monument and Finca del Secretario, also from the Roman period.

Make the most of your stay in Hotel Yaramar and discover the secrets and charm hidden in one of the most beautiful areas in Costa del Sol. The experience is well worth it!!

Historic Malaga

Historic Malaga

Have you planned to spend a day exploring Malaga city next time you are on holiday at Hotel Yaramar?

If that is the case you might find this post quite useful as this week we would like to give you a bit of information about the main historic monuments in the capital of Costa del Sol.

Among all monuments in Malaga both the Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro Castle are outstanding.

La Alcazaba, together with the cathedral, is possibly the most emblematic in town. Its name means fortress and it has a Moorish origin as it was built when the moors ruled the Iberian Peninsula.

It is located in the hillside of the Gibralfaro hill and it belonged to the then rulers of the city.

Although it is located in a high position it is part of the historical city centre.

On its top stands the Gibralfaro Castle which was built in the 14th Century to house the troops and protect the Alcazaba.

Its main tower offers stunning views of the city and on clear days it is even possible to see Africa and the Straight of Gibraltar from there.

If you fancy visiting both you would like to know that it is possible to get a regular joined ticket for only 3.55€, a reduced one for pensioners for just 0.60€ or a free ticket if you decide to do your visit on Sunday after 2:00 P.M.

And why don’t you make the most of this trip to Malaga by also visiting the Roman Theatre situated at the bottom of the Alcazaba? Its entry is free!

Malaga city is one of the most beautiful and popular cities in Spain, so if you do not know it well we recommend you to visit it and to explore it.

You will certainly not regret it!

Benalmadena Cable Cars

Benalmadena Cable Cars

It might be winter, but here in Costa del Sol we are very fortunate, and our weather is still amazing.

When on holiday, specially if the sun shines, there is no better plan than visiting the tourist attractions of the destination.

In the case of Costa del Sol, one of the most popular ones is the Benalmadena Cable Cars.

The Benalmadena cable car route links Benalmadena Costa with the peak of Monte Calamorro, at approximately 800 metres above sea level. This therefore is one of the highest points in Costa del Sol.

From the peak of the Calamorro you will enjoy stunning views of the coast and, if the weather allows it and it is a clear day, you might even manage to see Sierra Nevada, Gibraltar or the North of Africa.

This is a well worth trip as not many places offer such great views. In February and the service is available daily from 11:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M, the journey lasts about 15 minutes and each cable car takes up to 4 people.

The access to this service is very easy as the cable cars are taken just beside the Benalmadena – Arroyo de la Miel train station, which means that you can get there easily thanks to the train line that connects Fuengirola with other important resorts in Costa del Sol.

If you are interested in experiencing it or have any doubt regarding the entry tickets please click here to visit their official website.

Enjoy some of the most breath-taking views in Costa del Sol!

Celebration continues in Fuengirola and at the Yaramar

Last week at Hotel Yaramar we had a series of activities related to the fair so when this started on the 6th of October you could make the most of it.

If you were one of our guests who attended them now you might know why the fair is celebrated and what kind of things you can do and see in there. You possibly have learnt a few useful words that you can use if you visit it. You might also know how to wear your fair accessories and you might even have learnt how to dance the first sevillana… So many new things!!!

We have enjoyed sharing a little bit of our culture with you, but the best is yet to come as a fair in town does not feel like a fair if at Hotel Yaramar we do not celebrate our traditional party with you.

Costa del Sol, Costa del Golf

Costa del Sol, Costa del Golf

Are you a keen golfer? Would you like to play more during the winter but you can’t due to bad weather conditions in your area?

If this is the case why don’t you make the most of the great weather we have in Costa del Sol by playing golf in here?

As Costa del Sol is one of the most popular destinations for golfers last June Hotel Angela, Hotel Yaramar and Hotel Florida Spa decided to create a golf department in order to make the golfing experience much easier for you.

As many of you might not know about this new department this week we would like to dedicate this blog entry to the person in charge of it: Guillermo Gonzalez, our Group and Golf Sales Executive.

We have interviewed him so you can get to know him a bit better. This is what he said:

  • What do you like the most about your job and about working in a hotel?
I’m passionate about work and I love the fact it is related to one of the most beautiful sports ever. I love to be in contact with guests, organise their stay and look after them while they are in here in order to make sure they come back home filled with beautiful memories, happy with the experience and looking forward to visiting us againThis role makes me learn daily and it is quite challenging, so this is something I really enjoy.

  • Had you worked in the golf industry before? If so, where?
I used to work for The Ritz Carlton Abama in Tenerife (Canary Islands). I was a Golf Coordinator for this great resort, which even has its own golf course. In there holiday packs included green fees for the golf course of the hotel and for other courses in the island. I was part of the reservations team but at the same time I also offered a personalised service to guests. This role also made me get some good experience at organising important golf tournaments like the Abama ProAm

  • Why do you think so many golfers come to Costa del Sol?
We have the fortune of being in one of the best places in Europe for golfing. Temperatures here are great, with an average of 28 degrees in summer and 15 degrees in winter. This makes possible to play golf all year around. As we are by the coast courses here tend to face the Mediterranean Sea so views are amazing. There are 56 courses in here and the sun shines about 325 days a year, so it makes sense that Costa del Sol is also known as Costa del Golf.

  • What would you like to say to guests who play golf at home but have never tried to play in here?
I would like to motivate them to come and play as the atmosphere in Costa del Sol is great and the service and sea facing facilities are fantastic. It is a wonderful experience to be able to have breakfast while enjoying some beautiful sea views and then in less than 15 minutes being all ready to start playing golf. Plus in the evening you can make the most of our delicious local cuisine and have fun with friends or family.

  • Do you play golf in your spare time?
I started playing 4 years ago when I lived in Tenerife. One of my best friends was a caddie master in the Abama golf course and he was very passionate about it since he was a child. His passion was quite contagious so I started to play with him as my instructor. I got hooked since that first time when I hit that ball with an 8 iron.

  • In your opinion, what does golf have that other sports don’t? Why do people like it so much?
I think you get hooked to golf from day one. It does not matter how old you are or if you are male or female. It is much more than a sport. You embrace the environment and also the social life around it. Golf is also that cold beer with your mates after playing 18 holes, the friendly banter while you are playing. Golf is also about respect as you have to follow a dress code, you get to interact in the pro-shop and also with your caddie master. And well, as in all games there are some important rules you have to follow as well.

  • Would you like to share a message with our guests?
I would love them to contact us as we will offer them a personalised service before arrival and once they are at Hotel Angela, Yaramar or Florida Spa. They will enjoy lots playing golf in Fuengirola no matter if they are skilled golfers or beginners.

Thanks a lot for the interview, Guillermo!

If after reading this post you are eager to visit Costa del Sol to play golf and have a great time please contact Guillermo Gonzalez at: guillermo.gonzalez@mlhoteles.com or ask in our receptions about his services.

Costa del Golf awaits you!

Parque de la Batería

Parque de la Batería

Spring is here and with it also came the good weather so now we all feel like spending time outdoors making the most of the sun.

When you visit Hotel Yaramar you get to see that here in Costa del Sol we have beautiful promenades to stroll and enjoy when the sun comes out, but what not many people know is that we also have several wonderful parks worth a visit.

The green zone we want to show you today is Parque de La Batería.

Parque de La Batería belongs to the neighbouring town of Torremolinos, it is located in the Montemar area, and it is 74.000 square metres, being one of the biggest and most populars parks in Costa del Sol.

Getting there from Hotel Yaramar by train is very easy. You only need to get on the train in Los Boliches station and get off in Montemar Alto. The journey is very short, it just takes 18 minutes, and the access to the park is really good, so getting there is not difficult at all.

In its centre “La Batería” has an impressive artificial lake with rowing boats available for renting for just 1 Euro … So much fun!

Besides the amazing lake it also has a peculiar tower. The tower has a modern and innovative design and from it you will be able to enjoy some beautiful views of the coast.

The park opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 A.M to 9 P.M though it also opens on Monday afternoon till 9 P.M.

Here we encourage you to make the most of your stay in Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and visit it. To us there is no better way to enjoy a lovely sunny day than spending it in a beautiful place embracing nature.

Let us know how the rowing went and enjoy the experience!

The Cenachero

The Cenachero

The cenachero, together with the biznaga and the boquerón is a popular symbol of the city of Malaga, but who is he really and why is he so important in Costa del Sol?

The cenachero was a fisherman who rambled around the city of Malaga carrying fish (boquerones, mackerels, sardines, chanquetes or any kind of typical specie from the area) on baskets made of straw. This profession does not exist anymore.

Exactly 50 years ago Jaime Fernández Pimentel, author of the also famous statue of “The Biznaguero”, immortalized the figure of the cenachero in a statue inspired on a popular fisherman from Malaga known as Manolo “El Petaca”.

The sculpture, currently located in Plaza de la Marina, is 2 metres long and has a plaque with a beautiful poem about this typical character written by Salvador Rueda, a very famous poet also from Malaga. The poem in English would say more or less this:

“There you can see the fishermen

with their dark coloured baggy trousers

swinging their straw baskets

with their arms akimbo

when talking out loud

the veins of their necks swell

And in each beautiful fish

you can see a different scale

in each scale a different colour

and in each colour a sparkle”.

Although the cenachero is a character that does not exist anymore he is still well remembered in Malaga thanks to this beautiful bronze statue, which has made him become a real symbol of the city.

By the way, did you know that there is a city in Alabama (U.S) called Mobile which has a replica of our famous sculpture of the cenachero? It seems that Malaga and Mobile were twinned in the past so this is why this replica is located in a place called “Malaga Plaza” dedicated to the capital of Costa del Sol… So interesting!!

Don’t you know the statue of “The cenachero” yet? Make the most of your stay in Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and go to Malaga city for a bit of sightseeing…the city has so much to offer that it will impress you, besides, the access from Fuengirola is very easy thanks to the great train line that connects both cities…Do not hesitate and explore!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is round the corner, and as Hotel Yaramar loves any kind of celebration, this year we are going to do again our popular pumpkin contest.

Despite Halloween is not something that we traditionally celebrate in Fuengirola or anywhere in Costa del Sol, this is the 2nd year that we do this contest and if last year our staff proved that they were amazing artists, this year their work is outstanding and really impressing.

8 departments are competing for the prize, they all have worked hard and they have made the most of their imagination, putting a lot of effort in their scary projects.  The results are simply awesome, so we are afraid it is going to be difficult for you to choose a winner as all pumpkins look fantastic.

Last year the winning pumpkin was “Nightmare” and the creators of this spooky creature were the girls from Bar Patio… Will they be as lucky this year or another department will be the winner??? How exciting!!

Here we encourage you to visit our Facebook page to see our pumpkins more in detail and vote for your favourite. The winning department will get a dinner for the whole team…Good luck to them all, and may the best pumpkin win!

Happy Halloween!!

Holy Week in Malaga

Holy Week in Malaga

Fair of Marbella

Fair of Marbella

This week, the blog of Hotel Yaramar is all about celebrations as the fair season begins on the Costa del Sol.

Today, Monday, June 9th, the Marbella Fair kicks off. So, from today, Monday, and until next Saturday, June 14th, there will be an incredible festive atmosphere and a plethora of events in the city of Marbella, which will be greatly enjoyed by both locals and tourists.

Like all fairs, the Marbella Fair has a big day. In this case, the most important day is Wednesday, June 11th, commemorating the reconquest of the city by the Catholic Monarchs. June 11th is also the Day of San Bernabé, patron saint of Marbella. On this day, the saint is taken in procession, and being a public holiday in the town, it becomes one of the days when the fair receives a greater number of visitors.

As with the Malaga Fair or that of Torremolinos, this fair is experienced differently during the day and at night. During the day, celebrations take place in the old town, and as night falls, they unfold in the fairground.

If you are fortunate enough to be on holiday at the Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend that now more than ever you visit Marbella.... Living its fair is truly worth it!

Roasted chestnuts

Roasted chestnuts

Winter is getting closer and the temperatures in Costa del Sol start to lower a bit. When coldness arrives roasted chestnuts also do so. They are a traditional and hot snack typical from autumn that can be bought in the streets, in any of the many kiosks that this time of year are settled in our towns.

Their smell is something very typical in Spain from October till the end of the festive season.

Chestnut sellers have set up their kiosks in our neighbourhoods filling the air with that particular smell which is so inviting that when the dark comes we all feel temped to buy a cone of hot chestnuts.

Roasting them is not as easy as it seems, it is a skill that in families of sellers passes from parents to children.

A pair of pots with holes are put over a fire. Then scored chestnuts are put on the pot and some salt is added. From time to time the chestnut seller moves the pot in order to ensure an even roast. Once they are roasted they are put on a big tray and sold in cones.

In Spain eating them is not only a tradition but also a tasty pleasure… Is this done in your towns too or you had never heard about this great snack?

If you are staying with us in Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you want to taste them go and buy some in one of the kiosks in Los Boliches. Not only they are warm and lovely, they are delicious too!

Potato Salad from Malaga

Potato Salad from Malaga

On our last post we told you about the fantastic Erotic Tapa Route of Fuengirola and we recommended you to come to our Rivera Beach Club to taste the delicious tapa our chef Salvador has prepared for this contest.

Today’s post is also about gastronomy as we are aware that many of you come to Costa del Sol because of the great weather but also because of our tasty local food.

Because of this today we would like to dedicate this blog post to one of the most typical dishes in our area: the Malagueña Salad.

This is a healthy cold salad, with potatoes as main ingredient.

Apart from boiled potatoes it also contains oranges, spring onions, cod, boiled egg and green olives.

This salad is also seasoned with olive oil and vinegar and although mixing orange with cod might sound a bit strange this combination works perfectly well to the point that this is available in most bars and restaurants in the area and it is one of the most popular starters.

In fact this salad is now part of the excelent new lunch menu of our Rivera Beach Club! This menu is available to the public from Monday to Friday (No bank or local holidays) for only 14.50€.

If after reading this post you got a bit hungry and curious we recommend you to give it a go… it is quite unique and also well tasty!

Enjoy your holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and discover with us the delicious flavours of our local cuisine!

Enjoy Christmas in Fuengirola

Enjoy Christmas in Fuengirola

Here on the blog of the Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we have recommended several times visiting the capital of the Costa del Sol to enjoy its impressive Christmas lights.

Today's plan is still Christmassy, and you won't have to travel far to enjoy it because in Fuengirola, we're lucky to also have beautiful Christmas lights with a light and sound show included.

The show takes place daily until January 6th, and it has been happening annually for a couple of years now, becoming a tradition.

In addition to this, in the Plaza de la Constitución, there is a Christmas market organized by the Fuengirola City Council, where local businesses and artisans participate. The market has 17 wooden cabins and can be visited during the month of December.

Last year, right there in Plaza de la Constitución, there was a big fake snowfall. An event that undoubtedly makes the atmosphere of the city at this time of year even more magical.

Also worth mentioning is the medieval market held every December, transforming the street into an authentic medieval village.

In conclusion, if you've decided to spend these holidays with us at the Hotel Yaramar, we recommend that you take the opportunity and don't miss visiting the center of Fuengirola.

Gazpacho

Gazpacho

Last week we recommended you to make the most of the spring by visiting the beautiful Parque de la Batería. This week as the weather is still warm and lovely we encourage you to have a tasty and fresh gazpacho with us at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola.

Here at Hotel Yaramar you can give it a go either at the Rivera Beach Club, where it is available all year round, or at our restaurant, during the summer months in the Andalusian nights.

Gazpacho has to be served cold, it is very tasty and also contains lots of vitamins, therefore it is very healthy.

Among its main ingredients are bread, olive oil and fresh tomatoes, so it is one of the most important dishes of the Mediterranean diet.

Gazpacho is part of the typical Andalusian cuisine and has evolved with the years to the current version. This evolution has not only made it more delicious but also resulted in the creation of new yummy dishes like salmorejo or like ajoblanco.

Its origins are unclear though it is thought that it comes from the hottest regions of Spain where labourers needed a cheap and refreshing dish for a bit of energy boost.

In the 60s with the tourist boom gazpacho started to get known internationally.

Nowadays it is consumed during the warmest months as a low fat refreshing drink. 100ml of it only contains among 44 and 55 calories, which is amazing. Besides its little calories, it will also leave you well satisfied, so it is great if you want to lose weight.

It has been proved that having gazpacho regularly reduces probabilities of suffering certain kinds of cancer and as vegetables are its main ingredient it is obvious that it is also very good for our health in general.

Have you ever had gazpacho? Did you like it? Would you like us to show you how prepare it? Please, let us know on our Facebook page. It would be a pleasure to us to teach you!

Malaga Airport

Malaga Airport

Earlier this year here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar we shared with you some interesting facts about Spain and Andalusia and among them we included one about Malaga Airport.

On that post we said that the IATA code of our airport is “AGP” which is quite unusual as this code tends to be related to the name of the city.

In our opinion airports are fascinating places as they receive millions of people from around the world every year. They are also very important to the industry of tourism so we consider ourselves very fortunate for having such a fantastic airport so close.

For all these reasons and because we love flying this week we would like to share with you some more interesting facts about Malaga airport:
  • If we consider air traffic volume Malaga Airport is 4th in the rank of Spanish airports.

  • It is the main entrance of tourists who come to visit Costa del Sol or other parts of Andalusia. 85% of people who visit Andalusia land in Malaga.

  • More than 60 airlines operate in this airport. They connect Malaga with other Spanish and European destinations, as well as more distant places such as the Middle East or North America.

  • In 2011 its name got changed from “Malaga Airport” to “Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport”. Due to this fact a proposal regarding a change of its IATA code was submitted. If agreed the new code will be “SOL” instead of “AGP”.

  • Terminal 1 is the oldest. This was the one which received the massive amount of tourists who came to Costa del Sol in the 60s due to the tourism boom. Nowadays is the least used terminal.

  • Terminal 2 is from the early 90s, it was designed by the famous Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill and it is named after the most famous artist from Malaga of all times: Pablo Ruiz Picasso.

  • Due to the massive volume of air traffic a new terminal got built. This is terminal 3 and it was inaugurated in 2010 by the then King and Queen of Spain. Apart from the terminal also a new runway was created. This has improved air traffic considerably.

  • After getting bigger Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport has received more than 35 million passengers per year!… Very impressive!!

Is Malaga among your possible summer holiday destinations? Have you planned to come soon to Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, to be one of the many passengers who land in Malaga with a smile on their faces?

We hope you do as we are definitely ready to give you the warm welcoming you all deserve!

They all are from 9 A.M to 2:00 P.M, so if you are a shopaholic currently on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you to make the most of your time with us by having an early morning… that way you will have plenty of time to explore all the fantastic markets we have in the area!!

Monument to the Peseta

Monument to the Peseta

This week we would like to dedicate this post to the “Monument to the Peseta”. We imagine most of you already know it because it is located in Paseo Marítimo of Fuengirola just opposite Hotel Yaramar.

This monument was created by local artist and sculptor José Gómez Guerrero, who is also the author of many other sculptures located in Fuengirola like “Children at the beach” (also in Paseo Marítimo), “Monument to the ‘caballista’”, which is a sculpture of a man and a woman wearing typical flamenco dresses on top of a horse (located by the Fairground) or the “Monument to Seat 600” (in Los Boliches).

Our “Monument to the Peseta” was the first one in Spain dedicated to our former currency, though nowadays there are others in some Andalusian towns like Estepona (Málaga) or Roquetas de Mar (Almería).

It has been 10 years since we said bye-bye to our pesetas and we welcomed the euro, but there are still some nostalgics who miss them as it was the currency of Spain for over a hundred years.

What about you, do you also miss the peseta or you think euros are more convenient?

This great monument is very close to the hotel, so do not miss it. And remember, we would like you to share your comments and opinions in our Facebook page.

Picasso Year 2023

Did you know that this year is the 50th anniversary of the passing of Pablo Picasso?

To commemorate this event several museums in Malaga have organised throughout the year different exhibitions about our most international artist.

The Picasso’s Birth House Museum, together with Centre Pompidou Malaga and the Collection of the Russian Museum St. Petersburg-Malaga, will host the works of artist Bernardi Roig, until the 23rd of May. This shared exhibition in these 3 museums is called “The Last Face and the Aphonia of the Minotaur” and Picasso is his main inspiration.

Besides the works of Bernadi Roig, the Collection of the Russian Museum St. Petersburg-Malaga is also hosting the exhibition “Picasso, Draftman of Words”, which includes several of his sketchbooks and the Centre Pompidou is hosting another, called “A Time of one’s own. Breaking Free from the constraints of Everyday life”, available until October 2023, with works from artists like Picasso or Matisse.

On the other hand, Picasso Museum Malaga is hosting throughout the year the exhibition “Dialogues with Picasso. Collectionn 2020 – 2023”, which includes 162 works by Picasso.

Haute cuisine in Malaga

Haute cuisine in Malaga

At Hotel Yaramar we love good food and this is reflected in the dishes we offer our guests and also here on this blog as we talk quite a lot about gastronomy.

Those of you who visit Costa del Sol frequently may have already noticed that our area is very rich foodwise and that we have high quality local products here, but did you know that there are 4 Michelin star awarded restaurants in the Malaga region?

One of them is located in Malaga city while the other 3 are in Marbella, the most glamorous town on Costa del Sol.

To be more precise the one in Malaga city is at Muelle Uno ( Port of Malaga) and it is owned by the prestigious chef from Malaga José Carlos García

Marbella, with its 3 Michelin star awarded restaurants, is at the moment the second city in Spain, after San Sebastian, with more stars per inhabitant.

These 3 awarded restaurants are El Lago, Skina and Calima, being this last one the only one in the region awarded with 2 stars.

Calima belongs to the super famous local chef Dani García, who also owns a DeliBar in the Departures Lounge at Malaga Airport Terminal 3 and has recently opened a fantastic Spanish restaurant in New York called Manzanilla.

Here at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we always encourage you to make the most of your stay with us so we really hope you enjoy the good weather and the fantastic cuisine and high quality typical Spanish products our region offers.

On Costa del Sol not only awarded restaurants serve delicious food, here you really can eat amazing dishes almost everywhere!

Bon appétit!

La Casa de los Navajas

Last week, here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar, your Hotel en Fuengirola we told you about the beautiful Botanical Gardens of Torremolinos.

Today we would like to continue talking about Torremolinos to recommend you one the most stunning and less known attractions in Costa del Sol.

Have you ever gone to Torremolinos, seen a beautiful building from the distance while having a walk along the Bajondillo Beach and have wondered what is it?

This small palace is known as La Casa de Los Navajas and was declared as Historical monument by the Andalusian Government.

It was built around 1925 by entrepreneur Antonio Navajas, was acquired by the Torremolinos Council in 2000 and it opened its doors to the public in 2014 after being restored.

The day of Andalusia

The day of Andalusia

Each Thursday at 10:00 A.M. in Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we have a Spanish culture activity in which we talk about Spanish customs, gastaronomy and also share some information about Andalusia in general and Costa del Sol in particular.

Tomorrow, Tuesday the 28th of February, is the Day of Andalusia, so on this blog post we would like to explain you a little bit more about this special day.

The Day of Andalusia started getting celebrated in 1980, as it was then when Andalusia became a Spanish Autonomous Community with full autonomy.

When we speak about Andalusia, it is impossible not to mention Blas Infante, an Andalusian polititian, originally from the beautiful town of Casares (Malaga), who is considered as the father of Andalusia, mainly because his ideas helped to recover the history of Andalusia and because he defended the total autonomy of Andalusia.

While the Spanish anthem has no lyrics, the Andalusian one does, and the author of these is no other than Blas Infante.

He was also who designed the Andalusian flag and the Andalusian emblem. The flag has 3 horizontal stripes and its colours are green, white and green (colours that represent the Andalusian landscape, purity and hope).

Regarding the emblem of Andalusia, this is inspired in the emblem of the city of Cadiz, and includes the figure of Hercules with 2 lions between 2 columns and an inscription that says “Andalusia, for itself, for Spain, and for Humanity”.

If you found this blog post interesting and you would like to find out more about Spain or Andalusia, we invite you to attend our weekly Spanish Culture Activity.

It will be a pleasure to meet you there!

Hemingway & Ronda

Hemingway & Ronda

2014 started just a week ago and among the New Year’s resolutions of many of us are possibly to travel more or read more.

Not everybody loves reading the same kind of books or love the same authors, but what is undeniable is that Ernest Hemingway was one of the most important writers of all times and also a great traveler.

This American author did love Spain and this was featured in some of his work, being a good example of this his famous book “The Sun Also Rises”.

Hemingway hung out with famous Spanish artists like Pablo Picasso and attended the San Fermines in Pamplona a few times. This experience left him fascinated about bulls and bullfighting and made him write the above named book.

“The Sun Also Rises” received great reviews and it was considered his greatest piece of work. A few years later while in Spain he wrote a book called “Death in the afternoon” which was also about bullfighting and Spain.

His relationship with Spain was very important as not only he wrote about our country and our traditions but he also worked here as a reporter during the Spanish Civil War.

He was also very close friends with famous Spanish bullfighters like Antonio Ordoñez, who came from Ronda. In Ronda in fact there is a very famous promenade named after the popular American writer due to his deep friendship with Ordoñez and his love for this beautiful town. This promenade is one of the most emblematic in town as it is right by El Tajo gorge.

About Ronda he wrote that it is a place worth a visit. He considered it a very romantic town, perfect to get to spend time with a special lady due to its beautiful environment, its good wine, great food and its peacefulness.

We totally agree with him as Ronda is no doubt one of the most special and beautiful places in Costa del Sol, therefore the visit is more than worth it.

If you are passionate about bullfighting, you love Hemingway’s books and we have awoken your interest we recommend you to visit Ronda and get to explore it while on holiday with us at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola.

We are sure that, like Hemingway, you will also fall in love with it!

Mercado de la Merced

Mercado de la Merced

Last week here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar we published a post about one of the most popular dishes of our local gastronomy.

Today this blog is again about “good food” as we would like to recommend you a visit to a fantastic gourmet market.

This gourmet market is called Mercado de la Merced and it is located very close to Plaza de la Merced, the famous square where Picasso was born 134 years ago.

Mercado de la Merced is new but at the same time old as not till long it was a tradicional market with a few stalls where people from the neighbourhood did their shopping. Nowadays after a massive makeover it has become a fantastic gourmet market where people can do their shopping and also have a fantastic time having all kind of tapas with friends.

Now it looks trendy, cosmopolitan and fun. It is a busy and lively place in a great location that not only supports modern and traditional cuisine but also art as since it opened on the 29th of September it has housed some fantastic exhibitions. The first to arrive was the fantastic collection of jackets from Spanish celebrity chef Alberto Chicote which was followed by an exhibition called “The Streght of Art”.

If right now you are staying with us at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, you had planned to visit Malaga and you are a foodie we recommend you to visit Mercado de la Merced to try the best of modern Spanish cuisine.

We are sure this experience will be one of the best of your holiday!

Prehistoric Mijas

Prehistoric Mijas

Many of you have already visited Mijas, our beautiful hillside neighbouring town famous for its beautiful white houses and its characteristics donkeys, but… Did you know that it seems Mijas already had inhabitants back in prehistory?

Very recently people in charge of the archeological excavations currently done there have found some remains of pottery very typical of the Bronze Age.

Apart from the pottery an axe has also been found so it seems this might have been a burial site as there were also some bones nearby. Back in the day this was very common as people used to get buried with their valuable items.

These remains may belong to the first inhabitants of Mijas and possibly of Costa del Sol as they have been the only ones belonging to this age that have been found in the region… Can you imagine how different Mijas was during the Bronze Age?

Mijas was already a very interesting place to visit, but now after these discoveries even more so. Try not to miss the chance to visit it while on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola …As you can see Costa del Sol hides surprising secrets!

Palm Sunday in Fuengirola

Palm Sunday in Fuengirola

Sunday the 9th is Palm Sunday, the official start of Holy Week. As it is the first day of this very special week many religious events will take place all over Spain.

As every year in Fuengirola we will celebrate this day by carrying in procession what is considered as the most beautiful, most modest and nicest throne of all.

The image taken out in procession is quite new, as it was created by young sculptor Alvaro Abrines in 2014,and two of its most outstanding features are the peacefulness in Jesus eyes and the presence of a snail on its base.

This throne is known as “La Pollinica” as one of its figures is a very young donkey which in Spanish is known as a “pollino”. This donkey accompanies the figure of Jesus as the Bible states that he entered Jerusalem on a donkey.

Apart from the figures of Jesus and the donkey the throne also gets decorated with a palm trees and a wide variety of beautiful flowers.

If you have never experienced Holy Week in Spain, or if you have and loved it, Hotel Yaramar recommends you not to miss this beautiful procession that will take place on Sunday from midday till about 3:00 P.M and that will pass through the main streets of Fuengirola city centre.

Are you ready for a beautiful Spanish Holy Week?

Gazpachuelo

Gazpachuelo

We know that the good weather and the friendliness of the locals is not the only thing you like about Costa del Sol as most of you are also in love with our cuisine, for this reason today we would like to show you one of the most unique and typical dishes from Malaga: Gazpachuelo.

Gazpachuelo is a typical fishermen soup consumed in winter months which name is linked to the typical Andalusian gazpacho as they both have some common ingredients: bread, garlic, oil and water.

However, unlike the refreshing gazpacho the Gazpachuelo is served hot and among its many tasty ingredients are mayonnaise sauce, prawns, fish and potatoes.

It seems that in the old times it was a very common dish in humble homes that ended up being cooked in every home in Malaga and that now is even served in the best restaurants of the area.

Have you ever had Gazpachuelo? Would you like to try it? Make the most of your visit to Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and give it a go! Every Thursday for only 4 € you can have a delicious dish of gazpachuelo in our Rivera Beach Club. The rest of the days (from Tuesday to Friday) Rivera Beach Club has prepared for you other delicious dishes of the day that no doubt will reach your expectations… Eating typical food from Malaga is even more delicious if you do it while enjoying a beautiful seaview!

Bon appétit!

Happy Valentines

Happy Valentines

Next Thursday is Valentine’s Day, a day we all love as it is not only the sweetest celebration of the year but also a happy special day to spend with our loved ones.Jewelry, flowers, chocolate boxes, cards…but why on this day? Why is on the 14th of February, Saint Valentine’s Day, when many countries around the world celebrate love?

It seems that Saint Valentine was a martyr who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry as Roman Emperor Claudius II believed that married men made no good soldiers. According to the legend, Saint Valentine cut paper hearts and gave them to soldiers and Christians in order to remind them of God’s love. This possibly is the origin of the use of hearts on Saint Valentine’s Day.

The greatest English poet of the Middle Ages and Father of English literature, Geoffrey Chaucer, was the first who associated Valentine’s Day with romantic love.

By the 15th century, Saint Valentine’s Day had evolved into a day in which lovers expressed their love by sending cards, and presenting flowers and sweets.

Nowadays in the UK, an estimated 25 million cards are sent for this occasion and 1.3 billion pounds are spent on cards, chocolate, flowers and other gifts… impressive, right?

In Spain this special day is called “San Valentín” and it started to get celebrated by mid-20th Century, so compared to the UK it is a quite recent holiday though it is celebrated in the same way.

Did you know so many facts about Saint Valentine’s? Are you planning on something beautiful to impress your loved one? Or even better, are you spending Valentine’s Day in Costa del Sol? If so, Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, can assure you that you are going to have a lovely day as our staff, like on other special occasions, put a lot of effort in order to make you have a memorable day…Wait and see what we have in store for you! Get sporty in Fuengirola

Get sporty in Fuengirola

This week summer is officially over, but let’s not freak out as in Costa del Sol autumn also means nice weather.

Our autumn days are mild and the sun shines most of them so these lovely weather conditions are quite inviting and great to do sports outdoors.

As you know Hotel Yaramar is right by the promenade and this is definitely the best and most popular place to get fit as it is 7 kilometres long, all flat and it also offers amazing views and a very refreshing sea breeze.

Our promenade also has one of the best bike lanes in Malaga and this is why cycling is one of the most popular sports in town.

We all know cycling is great for our health, but maybe you have no idea of its many benefits. Here you have some of the most important:

1. It tones our leg muscles
2. It helps us correct the position of our back
3. It strenghtens our knees
4. It is a great anti stress therapy
5. It helps us burn fat and calories so it is good for our heart.

If you are planning to come on holiday to Hotel Yaramar and you would love to ride a bike while you are with us you will be delighted to hear that only a few days ago we started offering a bike rental service in cooperation with “Williams Bicycles”, so now it is possible to rent them and take them directly from us.

If you think this new service is great and you fancy having a go do not hesitate to ask our reception team.

Making the most of our great weather and getting fit while on holiday is definitely a great idea! Have fun!

Visits to the Sohail Castle

Visits to the Sohail Castle

Have you come on holiday to Fuengirola many times and although you have seen our castle many times from the distance you have never visited it?

We have good news for you as only a few days ago the City Council decided to open it to visitors for free from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 A.M to 2:00 P.M.

The main aim of these visits is to make both locals and tourists enjoy this fantastic monument and to help us discover a bit more about the history of our town.

The Fuengirola castle, also known as Sohail Castle, was built in the 10th Century after Caliph Abderraman III ordered its construction.

Its main purpose was being a fortress from where was possible to control the coast, so this is the reason why it is strategically up on a 38metre tall hill by the mouth of the river.

The fact that it is uphill means it offers stunning sea views and this is no doubt a good enough reason to visit it.

The castle has been destroyed and rebuilt on a few occasions and nowadays is considered as the most important tourist attraction in town.

Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, is a bit more than 1 mile away from it, so it is not to hard to get to it by walking down the promenade.

If you have not visited it properly make the most of your holiday with us and get to explore it… Because in Fuengirola we not only have lots of sun, we also have lots of history!

Espetos

Espetos

Do you know what an “espeto” is? If you have come on holiday to Hotel Yaramar you might have seen them, heard about them in our weekly Spanish Culture session or even tried them.

Just in case you do not know what they are this week we have decided to talk about them on our blog as we really do love them.

An “espeto” is a very traditional dish of our local cuisine and it literally is a skewer of sardines grilled in those wooden fishing boats that can be found here by the beach.

As you can imagine it is a very simple, modest and healthy dish, but in our opinion it is a must to give it a go when on holiday in Costa del Sol.

For this reason, and because at Hotel Yaramar we do love food, every two Wednesdays Simon and Emily from our Thomson Team organise a fantastic activity in our Rivera Beach Club in which they show our guests how to prepare tasty “espetos” that will of course be eaten afterwards.

If you are on holiday right now at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you to attend this fun activity on Wednesday, the 2nd of September, at 12:30P.MCooking has never been this fun or this easy!

Let’s make the most of this wonderful sunny weather! The sun is shining again in Costa del Sol so there is nothing better than enjoying our free time outdoors. Because of this amazing weather this week Hotel Yaramar would like to recommend you to visit Bioparc Fuengirola.

Bioparc Fuengirola is one of the most outstanding tourist attractions in Costa del Sol. It really is a tropical forest, a new concept of zoo where its animals live in an open space that recreates their natural habitat.

The park is divided in 3 big areas: Madagascar, Equatorial Africa and the Asian southeast; and each of them accommodates animal species and plants typical from these regions.

The superb baobab, located near the entrance, is no doubt the most outstanding feature of the zoo. This reproduction of a centenary African tree is the access to the wonderful island of Madagascar whose inhabitants are several families of friendly lemurs that you will be able to observe from a short distance.

In addition to this, this November every Saturday and Sunday the entrance price is reduced, so make the most of your stay in Hotel Yaramar and discover Fuengirola, you will enjoy a lot visiting local attractions as impressive as this.

"La Virgen del Carmen"

If you have visited us in previous years around this time, you'll know that this is a very important week both in our city, Fuengirola, and in our neighborhood, Los Boliches.

From Wednesday, July 15th to Sunday, July 19th, the Feria de Los Boliches will take place. If you are currently enjoying a wonderful vacation at the Hotel Yaramar, we recommend you visit the Fairgrounds as the celebration will be held there.

Every year, July 16th is the most important day of the year for many locals as it is the day of Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of Los Boliches and all sailors.

Although this festival is celebrated throughout Fuengirola, in Los Boliches, it is celebrated with special fervor as Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of this beautiful neighborhood of maritime origin.

The work of sailors and fishermen is hard and risky work, so due to the protection they believe their virgin provides them, every July 16th, many seamen parade her in gratitude.

This procession is considered by many to be the most beautiful and special one of the year as it ends with the virgin in the water surrounded by boats and fireworks.

If you happen to be at the Hotel Yaramar this Thursday, your hotel in Fuengirola, like every year, we invite you to enjoy this great celebration on our solarium.

Enjoy with us one of the most beautiful events of the year on the Costa del Sol!

Kazunori Yamauchi

Kazunori Yamauchi

Does the name Kazunori Yamauchi sound familiar to you? It possibly doesn’t, but you might get a bit curious if we tell you one of the most famous promenades in Ronda is named after him.

Kazunori Yamauchi is a Japanese videogame designer and professional driver who is also the producer of “Gran Turismo”, the world famous racing videogame.

In December 2013 “Gran Turismo 6” got launched. This is the last game of this popular saga and Spain was one of the countries featured on it.

Because of this and because Ronda is one of the circuits that appear on it, this beautiful hillside town in Costa del Sol was the place chosen to host the worldwide launch for this amazing videogame.

It seems Mr. Yamauchi really loves Ronda as he visited it when he was only a youngster and after that he has come back many other times.

He had always fantasized about featuring it in one of his racing games, so as this materialised in “Gran Turismo 6” the town of Ronda, as a thank you, decided to name after him one of the most famous and most beautiful promenades in Andalusia.

We know here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we have been talking quite a lot about Ronda lately, but who could blame us? We are of the same opinion as Mr. Yamauchi… Ronda is real beauty!

Secretary’s Estate

Secretary’s Estate

As you know Fuengirola is one of the most important and most beautiful towns in Costa del Sol. It was founded by fenicians and among the many civilisations that settled here were the romans and the arabs.

During the Roman occupation Fuengirola was called “Suel” and from this period we still have some archeological remains of a very important value. A good example is “Finca del Secretario”, located in Avenida Jesús el Cautivo close to Los Pacos. Los Pacos is a neighbourhood near Los Boliches, so it is easily accessible if walking from Hotel Yaramar.

“Finca del Secretario” was discovered in the 70s while doing the works for the construction of a new train line. It is an outstanding archeological site that counts with a salting factory, a pottery and some thermal baths dated from between the 1st and the 5th Century A.D.

Close to this site a sculpture in white marble from the Mijas mines was also found. This sculpture is commonly known as “The Venus from Fuengirola”.

“Finca del Secretario” is open every day of the year, from Monday to Sunday, from 10 A.M to 7 P.M and the entry is free, so if you are passionate about history and the Roman Empire, do not hesitate, go and visit it, have a great time there and discover the historical heritage of Fuengirola.

Torrijas

Torrijas

Easter is one of our favourite time of year at Hotel Yaramar as it is spring and many of you decide to make the most of the holidays by visiting us.

There are lots to do in Costa del Sol during Easter, from sunbathing, to attending our Holy Week processions or enjoying the delicious traditional sweets and cakes available this time of year.

While Easter eggs are the most popular sweets in most European countries, in Spain our most popular treat are torrijas.

Torrijas are quite similar to French toast. They are delicious and pretty easy to prepare so today we would love to share its recipe with you:

Ingredients for 2 people:
  • Hard bread

  • ¼ litre of milk

  • 2 tbs flour

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 lemon

  • ½ glass if olive oil

  • Cinnamon stick

  • 1 tbs grounded cinnamon

  • 1 tbs sugar

Method:

Pour the milk in a pan and add a bit of lemon peel and a cinnamon stick. Heat in a medium heat for about 5 minutes. After this transfer it to a different container and let it cool down.

Cut the bread into 3 centrimetre thick slices and put them in a dish. Pour the milk over them and let them soak for about 10 minutes. In the meantime, beat the eggs and put the flour in a wide bowl.

Take 1 piece of bread, get rid of the excess of liquid, coat it in flour and then dip it in egg. Do the same with all the slices.

Now it is time to fry them up, so put the oil in a pan and let it heat. Once it is ready start frying them up until golden. When you take them out, we recommend you dry them with some kitchen paper as it will help to get rid of the excess of oil. To finish off, mix the sugar and the grounded cinnamon and sprinkle the mix all over them.

Cooking torrijas is easy and quite cheap, so if you are at home and love cooking, we would love you to give them a go.

On the other hand, if you are spending Easter with us at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you fancy trying them you can find them in most local bakeries as well as in the sweet area of our buffet.

It’s Torrijas time! Enjoy them!

A "smurf" and a "cloud"

If you are not from Malaga you might find the title of today’s post quite weird.

Here though these words are something we hear daily in any bar or café at breakfast or teatime.

After this little explanation you might be even more curious, so let’s explain properly what a “smurf” and a “cloud” really mean in Costa del Sol.

If during your holiday you hear the word “pitufo” ( smurf in English) it is almost certain that the person who said it wasn’t really talking about the cute blue creatures created by Belgian comic artist Peyo.

Here in Malaga a “smurf” is a small hot and toasted bread roll that depending on what you put on it can become a real delicacy.

Considering we are in Andalusia it is not surprising one of the most popular “smurfs” are the ones that come with olive oil and tomato… Very Meditarrean and also very healthy!

Regarding the “cloud” when we say it in a café we are not talking about the weather, but about coffee.

In Malaga there are many ways to name the kind of coffee you fancy depending on how much milk you want in it.

A “nube” ( cloud in English) in fact is a coffee that contains a lot of milk and very little coffee and if it is served in a glass and not in a cup even better… much more authentic!

As you know here at Hotel Yaramar we really enjoy sharing with you some fun facts about our region so we hope you found today’s post interesting.

Who would have thought that ordering a tasty breakfast in Costa del Sol was so much fun!

Sunflower seeds

Sunflower seeds

Have you done a bit of people watching while on holiday in Spain and realised that here it is very common to eat sunflower seeds?

Sunflower seeds are a very popular snack among Spaniards, while everywhere else in the world they are quite unusual…in fact, while here you can buy them in any supermarket, sweet shop or kiosk, in other countries they can only be found in pet or health food shops.

Although nobody really know for certain the origin of this typical Spanish tradition, it is almost impossible to walk around any square in Spain and not finding someone seated on a bench eating sunflower seeds for hours.

The seeds are sold in bags of different sizes, they can be salted or not, and in general they come whole, so you need to be quite skilled to open them with your teeth, eat the seed and then throw the hull away.

Although they are quite addictive, as it is impossible to eat just the one, they are very good for our system as they contain high levels of Vitamin E and B, which gives us a lot of energy and are a good anti-ageing remedy.

They are also rich in fibre, omega-6 fatty acids, have antioxidant properties and help us fight against cholesterol.

If you love Spain and would fancy to know more about our peculiar customs, you might like to know that after a 2 week break, from the 27th of April, our free Spanish culture activity is back every Thursday at 10:00 in the Churchill Bar of Hotel Yaramar.

See you there!

Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen

There are many wonderful statues in Malaga that represent important people born in here or typical characters of the city.

A good example of this is the statue of Pablo Picasso in Plaza de la Merced or the statues of the “Biznaguero” and “Cenachero” in the Gardens of Pedro Luis Alonso and Plaza de la Marina respectively… But did you know that in Plaza de la Marina there is another statue that represents another important person?

The person we are talking about is the worldwide known Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, famous for writing beautiful tales such as “The Little Mermaid” or “Ugly Duckling”.

The statue was ordered by the Danish Royal Family and was made by a sculptor from Cordoba resident in Fuengirola called José María Córdoba. The statue has been there since 2005 and it represents the writer sited on a bench with a relaxed attitude.

But why is there a statue of Andersen in Malaga? It is very simple, it seems that Andersen visited Malaga in October 1862 and he wrote about it on his book “In Spain”. On it Andersen said that nowhere in Spain he had felt as happy and as comfortable as in Malaga… Beautiful words!! Do you agree with him?

If like Andersen you are also at your happiest in Costa del Sol make the most of your stay at Hotel Yaramar and explore the area… Malaga has many more beautiful things to offer than you can imagine!

Los Gaitanes Gorge Protected Natural Area & Caminito del Rey

This week on the blog of Hotel Yaramar we bring back our section about natural landscapes in the Malaga area.

Our recommendation this time is Los Gaitanes Gorge Protected Natural Area.

Los Gaitanes Gorge is a canyon created by river Gualhorce in inland Malaga, between the towns of Ardales, Álora and Antequera.

In Los Gaitanes Gorge is where “El Caminito del Rey” (The King’s Pathway”) is located. This is a walkway pinned along the walls of the narrow gorge of El Chorro.

This amazing walkway is more than 3 kilometres long, was closed for over 25 years as it had fallen into disrepair, but after a lot of renovation works it opened again to the public in 2015.

“El Caminito” is about 1 hour away by car from our hotel and since its reopening 3 years ago it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Malaga.

If you would like more information about this beautiful place or you would like to book a visit please click here to access its official website http://www.caminitodelrey.info

If enjoy rambling you will surely love “El Caminito del Rey”, as there are not many places in the world as stunning as this one, and we have the great fortune of having it close.

Enjoy nature during your holiday in Costa del Sol!

Meet our staff

This month, Hotel Yaramar wants to invite you to meet the team that makes this hotel an incredible place.

Many of the employees at Hotel Yaramar have been with us for over 20 years, and all of them together form a great family. They love their job and enjoy interacting with the clients, making them feel at home, and assisting them as much as possible.

Alicia, our receptionist, mentioned that after many years of working with us, she has lots of stories to share. She fondly remembers this one: "It was fun and lovely when on December 25th, after the gala dinner, several couples of clients brought us a little drink to toast with them and sang a Christmas carol in English to Sebastián and me who were on duty."

She also shares that many clients are particularly affectionate, and during Christmas, Easter, or their birthdays, they often send her greeting cards, which touches her as it's heartwarming to know that they remember her when they return home. She also admits that she likes when they gift her flowers, but what truly satisfies her is when they say, "we felt at home."

These kinds of testimonials convince us that the human quality of our team is very abundant.

To conclude, our friendly receptionist sends you a final message: "I hope you share your experiences with us, whether you've been on an excursion or had a special moment, and... of course, in case of any issue, we're here to help!"

Beach warning flags

Beach warning flags

Many of you choose to come on holiday to Hotel Yaramar not only because of the great weather we have here but also because of our great location right by the beach.

Beaches in Costa del Sol are some of the best in Andalusia; in fact this year here we have 24 beaches with blue flags, a certification only the best beaches in the world receive.

3 of these 24 great quality beaches are in Fuengirola, and the Los Boliches one, right opposite the Yaramar, is one of them.

Although it is a fantastic beach with clean water and great sand we should always be cautious and check the beach warning flags before getting into the sea.

These flags are usually displayed alone on a pole and have a traffic light colour system. A green flag indicates a safe bathing condition, a yellow one, means bathing with caution, while a red one indicates bathing is prohibited as it is very dangerous.

Now that you know about this warning system we are sure you will pay more attention and feel much safer next time you go to the beach.

It is time to enjoy the sun and have a nice swim!

Adapted Beaches for disabled people in Fuengirola

Did you know that Fuengirola is the perfect place for people with limited mobility willing to enjoy a day at the beach?

In year 2000 the Fuengirola Council adapted Las Gaviotas beach, which is not that far from Hotel Yaramar as it is right opposite the Ronda 3 apartments.

Now the Council has installed accessible platforms in more spots of the coast and they also have pergolas for shade, special crutches, hoists, water friendly wheelchairs and lifeguards.

The adapted beaches are by the Castle, in the town centre beach area, in Las Gaviotas and in Carvajal.

For our part, we have adapted the accesses to our Rivera Beach Club and we now have an area with 2 sunbeds reserved to people with reduced mobility.

Because in Fuengirola now everybody can enjoy the summer and our beautiful beaches!

Outdoor gym

Outdoor gym

One of the best things about Hotel Yaramar without a doubt is its wonderful beachfront location. The beaches of Fuengirola and its Paseo Marítimo are one of the best in Costa del Sol because of its cleanliness and its length.

It is very common to see many clocals and tourists enjoying the great temperatures and getting fit at the same time, as little by little our Paseo Maritimo has become an outdoor sports circuit by the sea.

Our Paseo Marítimo already had some training areas equipped with some gym equipment which aim was to offer the possibility of training while enjoying the beach… how wonderful! exercising in a free outdoor gym by the sea is not something that everybody has access to!

Last December the authorities in Fuengirola went a bit further and now not only we have the equipment but also some information signs along the 7 kilometres of length that the Paseo Maritimo has (from Carvajal to the Sohail Castle), so this way if you walk, skate, run or go cycling you will be able to know where exactly you are and how many kilometres you have covered… At last, getting fit made easy!

In fact very close to Hotel Yaramar and just opposite Hotel Ángela, as that is the halfway point of the circuit, now there is a big board that contains different warming up and stretching exercises to help you get ready to workout.

What do you think about this initiative? Had you noticed the existence of this signs? We love anything involving being outdoors and by the sea, so as we know that you also love our beach and the sun that shines most days, we encourage you to make the most of our great Paseo Marítimo and our wonderful weather by exercising a little bit.

Let’s start this new year in a good way, being healthy and active!

Andalusia and the film industry

Andalusia and the film industry

This Friday, the 28th of February, is a bank holiday in our area as we celebrate the Day of Andalusia.

Andalusia is the most populated region in Spain and one of our most important tourist destinations.

Its unique charm, beautiful corners and diversity of landscapes make it a perfect place to film all kind of movies.

We mistakenly think that most films are filmed in Hollywood or in the exact place where the story is meant to happen, though reality is well different. Many films have been shot in Andalusia and we are sure you have been seen many of them quite a few times. We are about to tell you about some of them…Ready to get shocked?

  • In the Desert of Tabernas, in Almeria, many directors filmed very famous Westerns like “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. This is Europe’s only desert.

  • Some scenes in “Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade” were also filmed in Almeria, though the desert and the train scenes were shot in Guadix (Granada).

  • Some of the scenes in “Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace” and “Episode II: The Attack of the Clones” were shot in Andalusia, to be more precise in Sevilla. Princess Amidala’s Palace on Naboo is the famous Plaza de España in Sevilla.

  • The scene of “Lawrence of Arabia” that happens right after crossing the desert was also shot in Plaza de España in Sevilla. The desert shots were taken in Níjar, Almería.

  • The last scene of the Swedish version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” was filmed in playa de la Malagueta in Malaga.

  • Many scenes of “James Bond: Die Another Day” were filmed in Cadiz. The famous one where Halle Berry sauntered from the sea wearing an orange bikini is one of them.

  • Some of the outdoor shots of “Night & Day” starred by Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz were taken in Cadiz and the motorbikes scenes were filmed in Sevilla.

Did you know about this? Had you noticed when you watched them? It would be impossible to name them all, but as you can see many blockbusters have been filmed here.

If you are a film fanatic and you would love some of the scenes of your life to happen in Andalusia and Costa del Sol, we hope to see you very soon at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola… We cannot think of a better setting!!

New coastal path

New coastal path

This week here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, we would like to suggest you a fantastic outdoor plan as in spring good weather is almost always guaranteed.

We are aware that most of you really appreciate the sun and the sea, so for this reason we think that you would surely love to walk through the coastal path that is currently being finished.

The coastal path is a pathway that will connect the 111 miles of coastline from Nerja to Manilva.

Right now it is 75% walkable, so it won’t take too long for it to be totally completed.

If right now you are on holiday with us at Hotel Yaramar and you fancy making the most of this new tourist attraction we recommend you to do the 3.7 mile long section that links La Cala de Mijas with Calahonda.

This section is one of the most beautiful as the wooden walkway goes parallel to the coast. It has several direct accesses to the beach, and it is ideal for pedestrians and ciclists as it is quite an easy route to do.

The coastal path combines environment, sport and tourism, so if you enjoy going rambling and discovering beautiful locations when on holiday, you are going to love it!

Keeping fit in such a beautiful setting is much less hard!

Sugarcane Honey

Sugarcane Honey

Some weeks ago, here on the blog of Hotel Yaramar we told you about the great quality of the new dishes available at the Rivera Beach Club and we shared with you on our Facebook page the menu designed by our chef Salvador López.

Today continuing with the topic of local food and culture we would like to tell you about sugarcane honey, a very typical product from the Malaga region which is also a very important ingredient in one of the dishes of Salvador’s menu.

One of the most popular and most recommended dishes of his menu is the fried aubergine with sugarcane honey. Sugar cane honey is very typical from here and also the perfect ingredient not just in desserts but also in savoury dishes, like fry ups, as the mix of so very different flavours works incredibly well.

sugarcane honey is sweet and delicious but it is very different to the honey made by bees. This is much darker, was invented using sugarcane as raw material and it was introduced in Spain by the Moors.

At the moment the only sugarcane honey factory in Europe is located in Málaga, in a beautiful hillside town called Frigiliana which belongs to La Axarquía. This region is the only one where sugarcane grows due to its great weather and the wonderful condition of its soil.

Sugarcane honey is something unique, with a very distinctive flavour and with many good properties for our health as it is mainly juice of sugarcane that has been purified by machines.

If you are on holiday at Hotel Yaramar, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you fancy tasting one of the most typical products from Costa del Sol and one of our best recipes, we recommend you to go to the Rivera Beach Club and order the delicious aubergines with sugarcane honey cooked daily by Salvador…We are sure you have never eaten anything as unique!

Enjoy Summer at Hotel Yaramar

Enjoy Summer at Hotel Yaramar

If you come to Hotel Yaramar during the summer you will enjoy some fantastic evenings by the sea at our pool terrace, as our Snack Bar opens on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 P.M to 12:00 A.M.

There you will have some fun in good company, having a drink and enjoying the live music we have available from 9:15 P.M to 10:45 P.M.

If you have been at Hotel Yaramar this time of year you might already know that the 16th of July is a very important date in Fuengirola as it is the Day of Virgen del Carmen.

Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of the beautiful neighbourhood of Boliches, where Hotel Yaramar is located.

The Day of Virgen del Carmen is Sunday the 16th of July, and from Thursday the 13th to Monday the 17th, Los Boliches celebrates its fair in honour of the Virgen in the fairground, where there will be attractions and music and dance performances among other events.

Fuengirola is a coastal resort and Los Boliches is a traditional fishermen’s quarter very devoted to its Virgin. Being a man of the sea is a very hard and risky job, so these brave men believe the Virgin protects them and keeps them safe. For this reason every 16th of July fishermen and sailors take the Virgin out in procession as a way to say thank you.

This amazing and unique procession ends with the Virgin at the sea surrounded by boats and beautiful fireworks.

Due to our excellent location our hotel is possible to enjoy this fantastic event from our pool terrace, so if you are currently staying at Hotel Yaramar, you are invited to experience this great celebration, on Sunday the 16th of July from 9:00 P.M.

Let’s enjoy one of our most beautiful traditions that has just been awarded as a Holiday of Tourist Interest by the Malaga provincial Government!
