The spring is already here, and tomorrow we usher in the month of April. This April 2014 marks 41 years since the death of the great Picasso, so this week we want to dedicate this blog entry to the greatest artist that the Costa del Sol has ever had.

Here are some interesting facts about him that you may not know:

  • His name was Pablo, although when baptized, he received a much longer name: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Crispiniano de la Santísima Trinidad.
  • Like all Spaniards, he had 2 surnames: Ruiz Picasso. As an artist, however, he decided to dispense with the paternal surname and used his mother's as it was more unique.
  • The surname Picasso is of Italian origin, as his great-grandfather was originally from Genoa.
  • His family was bourgeois, but he declared himself a pacifist and a communist.
  • His father worked as a drawing teacher in Málaga.
  • His family left Málaga when he was 10 years old.
  • He died in Mougins, France, on April 8, 1973, at the age of 91.
  • In addition to painting, he also did engraving, ceramics, sculpture, and even costumes for theater productions.
  • He had 8 significant women in his life, and all of them were reflected in his work. He was married twice and had 4 children.
  • He was a great bullfighting enthusiast.
  • His first painting was on a bullfighting theme, and he painted it at 8 years old. He always had a special love for this work, so he never parted with it.
  • He painted more than two thousand works that are distributed in museums around the world.
  • In 1911, he was questioned in connection with the theft of La Mona Lisa from the Louvre Museum.
  • Picasso is, in fact, the most stolen and forged artist in history.
