Happy Valentines

Next Thursday is Valentine’s Day, a day we all love as it is not only the sweetest celebration of the year but also a happy special day to spend with our loved ones.Jewelry, flowers, chocolate boxes, cards…but why on this day? Why is on the 14th of February, Saint Valentine’s Day, when many countries around the world celebrate love?

It seems that Saint Valentine was a martyr who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry as Roman Emperor Claudius II believed that married men made no good soldiers. According to the legend, Saint Valentine cut paper hearts and gave them to soldiers and Christians in order to remind them of God’s love. This possibly is the origin of the use of hearts on Saint Valentine’s Day.

The greatest English poet of the Middle Ages and Father of English literature, Geoffrey Chaucer, was the first who associated Valentine’s Day with romantic love.

By the 15th century, Saint Valentine’s Day had evolved into a day in which lovers expressed their love by sending cards, and presenting flowers and sweets.

Nowadays in the UK, an estimated 25 million cards are sent for this occasion and 1.3 billion pounds are spent on cards, chocolate, flowers and other gifts… impressive, right?

In Spain this special day is called “San Valentín” and it started to get celebrated by mid-20th Century, so compared to the UK it is a quite recent holiday though it is celebrated in the same way.
